Ulcinj-Shkoder border crossing

Earth > Europe > Southern Europe > Balkans > Ulcinj-Shkoder border crossing

The Montenegro-Albanian border crossing is between the cities of Ulcinj on the Montenegro side and Shkoder on the Albania side. One can walk across this border on foot. The border crossing is fairly primitive and offers no amenities such as an ATM, toilet, or shop. Gypsies sometimes beg on the Albanian side of the crossing just ignore them.

Type: Road

During the summer traffic in the direction toward Albania is relatively heavy, however toward Montenegro traffic is much lighter. You may have to walk several kilometres toward the village of Vladimir before you someone offers you a lift.

If you want to avoid any hassle with border crossing, you can take a bus from the Ulcinj main bus station to Shkoder for 5€ (daily at 6:00, 7:00, 13:15)

Hitchhiking out

South towards Tirana

After walking across the border, stand about 25 meters down the road where all traffic leaving the border post will pass you. A sign reading "Tirana" is essential. While some drivers may stop, ask for money, or claim that hitchhiking is impossible in Albania, it is quite possible with a little patience to get a lift straight to Tirana from here with no payment necessary.
