- Yes, because the service area at IJsseloordweg has been reopened in october 2006, like I wrote in the replaced text. The rest of Tom's contribution seemed irrelevant and undesirable; relating the impression that Arnhem has a high share of 60+ drivers with WWII, that there are gangs with saloon cars and adding the caption "hh out of arnhem - one hitch too far is really undesirable and certainly not true. It seamed a way to express frustration, but that's not the right place here ~ then use a boxing ball instead ;). Also, the advice to change an itinerary to Nijmegen when stuck in Arnhem and heading for Germany (eg on the spot that does not exist anymore according to Tom) is not that good. Especially now that the service station under reconstruction on IJsseloordweg is back in service. Besides that it would not be easier or less hard over Nijmegen (or I do not know how to claim that ~ I'm interested to hear why it would be easier over Nijmegen, which isn't the case I claim). Because between the now returned service area and the German border there are still 2 service areas, so only a short ride out of Arnhem makes the world go round, if you have a driver going only to Doetinchem or Zevenaar, you already get by service area Oudbroeken (A12 between exits 28 and 29). And if the service area on IJsseloordweg would be taken out of service, it would still be doable to get a ride there from junction Velperbroek, the roundabout which connects A12, A348 and IJsseloordweg, or at the Esso petrol station in the south of Velp, 100 meter before Velperbroek roundabout! :) Well, it would have been better to discuss the matter and not change, or do this prior to changing the page. Waiting time per country distribution
Your method of allocating waiting times to countries as a proportion of the distance covered in each country is not "somewhat discussable", it's utterly ridiculous! If I were a follower of this method, I'd have a waiting time in SK for a ride that started in CZ and ended in H, without even stopping in SK... Prino 00:04, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- Prino. In that chart the distances per country are accurate, where I mean distance of cross border lifts is allocated to the country in which that lift started. Eg, the distance of a ride east from service station Tienbaan neer Heerlen I add to the Netherlands, even though only one kilometer of that ride took place in the Netherlands. Criterium: where did a ride start. Robert, I agree and will early next year re-calculate the waiting times, with allocation to the country in which a lift started, no matter if that ride took place for 1%, 50%, 99%, 100% or whatever% in the country where the lift started. --Fverhart 16:47, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- You're probably right, but for conviviality it's better to stick to calling each other's ideas "ridiculous" in real life. ;)

- The average distance per ride.

- Guaka. A lot more data is not really needed. Or anyway, those stats can never be used in general. My stats are pretty worthless if you do not know that I usually hitch at once through Germany or for quite a distance. In Czech Republic I did more local, short distance hitching. In my opinion, collecting data of one million rides is not more worth than data of twenty rides. Just it is somehow interesting to keep track, as it can be useful for later analyzation. One another example, recently I less often hitch the really short distances up to 20 km, I used to hitch more even 5 km, which obviously has it's influence on the lift average length; this one got higher in most of the consecutive years but not or not only due to better developed technique or better knowledge of infra and culture aspects. These days I was creating some charts and figures of my statistics, eg accumulated hitched distance for each consecutive month, starting from 2002. --Fverhart 16:47, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Just for fun I looked at my waiting time per KM, (2013-07-04: 364,457.7 km, 2165:47 hours), and that gives me 21.39 sec/km for the total. No plans to it on a per-country basis. Prino (talk) 12:27, 4 July 2013 (CEST)
Wonderful! Mine has been around 18 sec/km (=0.30 min/km) over the last five years, as a quite stable fact. Obviously some important factors (already tipped by me a bit above from here), such as length distribution of rides, have their influence. Also deciding is how we define waiting time. Should waiting time include the time it takes to hike from the place where one stepped out of a vehicle to the next location (if there is any distance in between them, it being 500 meter or 10 km for example). This factor has caused the sec/km ratio to be very high for Lithuania. We once got a lift after walking 90 minutes / 6 kms, until the first vehicle appeared driving in the right direction. Same, should the time it takes to get to the initial hitching spot (with whatever kind of vehicle or on foot) be included in the waiting time for the first ride? How do we count the hiking part of hitchhiking? As for pure breaks from hitchhiking to have a rest or refreshment (when you do 100% ignore passing vehicles for the purpose of doing something else) - I generally exclude them from counting waiting time. If I walk and raise my thumb to passing drivers, while I am walking to the spot which I consider as the initial hitchhiking spot, at what point should I start counting waiting time? My waiting times exclude situations where I ultimately decided to travel by other means before obtaining a lift - should I include these? I do not only hate them, I also like them. Depending on the time there is mostly. Last October I returned from Klodzko in Poland and decided to take the shorter way over regional roads Klodzko - Nowa Ruda - Walbrzych - Jelenia Gora - Zgorzelec, in stead of Klodzko - E8 - Wroclaw - E40 - Zgorzelec. Klodzko to Jelenia Gora took some six hours (good 150 km), JG to Eindhoven took some 9 hours (900 km). Over Wroclaw to Zgorzelec would have taken two or three lifts, would have been some 50 kilometres more, but would have been lots faster, probably between 3 and 4 hours (2/3 national road, 1/3 motorway). However obviously the rides of 1032 and 85 km that I got yesterday and brought me near to home were very pleasant, and forever the ride that let me cross the first 50 k barrier will be also my first ride of over 1 k! I've thought about celebrating the 50 k mark with VHHC in Wilno (oops, Vilnius), perhaps I'll keep this idea for the 100 k. Thumbs up for 2009. --Fverhart 22:19, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

- Hi Frank, i like your statistics. I try to keep a logbook to. I have also the same like your gender studies ;) but only in a excel table on my stand alone pc. maybe we could establish a possibility to join statistics from more hitchhikers, so we get overall statistics. maybe with a web formular or something. does something like this exist? - Did not see that one yet. Added it to http://lifters.startpagina.nl. It's really a small world, that's what I thought when I realized that this blog is edited by Robin (or Robino, dunno). Frank dank voor je welkomstwoord op mijn versaangemaakte userpagina. Ik ben overigens ook vaker lang van stof. En neig teveel hooi op mijn vork te nemen. Met betrekking tot deze hitchwiki, wil ik niet veel gaan toevoegen. Maar de pagina's over Lille zijn rijp voor betere structurering. Ten behoeve van betere leesbaarheid. Mijn zoon, een twenner, komt volgende week met een vriend naar Lille. Dan willen ze naar Parijs door liften. Hij is afgelopen zomer plotseling met liften begonnen. Blijkbaar smaakt het hem naar meer. En ik vind het een mooie aanleiding om eens een kleine bijdrage te leveren aan deze hitchwiki. Die ik overigens nooit gebruik; ik voel me een oude, door economische situatie, herintredend in het liftersgilde.
Tot slot tik ik hieronder mijn indruk van de wiki: Wat een rommeltje! Ik ben voel me niet lekker op dergelijke rommelige, versnipperde informatie. Wat een enthousiasme ook bij de mensen die zich inzetten om de wiki naar een hoger niveau te tillen ... (en ik hoop dat dit nu een goede plek is om te reageren op je welkomstwoord)
Crossable rest areas in various countries
Did you actually test all crossings yourself? Or just used Google Maps?
And, already changed, it's Pedestrian Bridge (and not Pedestrians Bridge) ;)
- Hi Prino, please, don't forget to add the signature in User talk ;)
- Much of this is Google maps + streetview which is not always 100% up to date and, not to forget, observations on the road (without testing the possibility).
- Testing has the advantage of knowing if gates in fences are locked or not - my experience is that fences made for letting people on foot through are not locked (tried that in NL, F, CH, LUX), but they might be locked (e.g. Aire la Courneuve, A1, Paris-Aubervilliers) or the situation might change (doors in noise barriers in NL are nowadays only accessible for going out, which as an example made entering service station Meerssen (a.k.a. De Kruisberg) just north of Maastricht on the A2 impossible.
- Foot bridges and foot tunnels sound miraculous, but those might be closed temporarily (e.g. service station just west of Linz in A, personal experience, and various cases in Italy, as seen on Google streetview with signs "foot tunnel closed"). - And more on topic: now that I'm hitching less in Germany in favor of France, the 250 km limit has actually become a lot more exciting; France 10 out of 127 rides over 250 km (less than 10%) - in Germany 52 out of 277 (close to 20%)... As for quickly collecting 250+ km rides, try east-west motorways of Poland and Germany... the 250+ rides there are both NOT rare and the average speeds are high so that collecting goes quicker! --Fverhart (talk) 23:50, 31 May 2016 (CEST)

Crossable rest areas
First of all, great idea! Dunno if it was yours, but I'm in awe :-)
Second of all: Where do you get the information from? OSM?
Thirdly: I imagine that there is much less service areas where you can NOT cross. True? If so, wouldn't it make sense to add a list of the no-no ones for easy reference?

- Info is mostly from Google streetview / maps, http://motorways-exitlists.com/europe/europe.htm and (for France) https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_autoroutes_de_la_France. There is a page with all bridge restaurants https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_restaurant. I imagine that not all bridge restaurants crossings are open 24/24. But the job is big. Yes, it makes sens to have a list of not crossable stations. Or in other words lists of all stations, crossable or not. Or to integrate crossability with exit lists on Hitchwiki. - Hm, I'm most convinced by integrating them with the exit lists. Good idea. Are you aware of how complete the exit lists are for the countries for which there are crossability lists up to now? It would be cool to design a little template the size of the hitchability template with a symbol in green (crossable) and in red (not crossable). - The exit lists on Hitchwiki I guess are not very complete and have been made more or less haphazard. Best would be to work out everything, but do you know what a shitload of work that is. For the sake of ease I only list the crossable stations for now. Perhaps, in the future, when the lists are complete (mid 2016 ;) - other things. Adding color icons to the crossability list is an idea and perhaps not hard to implement. A service station crossable in 60 minutes makes me less happy than one which has a pedestrian bridge. But I'd rather not rate them. How would we rate service stations for both directions situated on one side of the motorway... or, even worse, situated in the middle of a junction of two motorways (Raststaette Voralpenkreuz in Austria)... ;) Probably later this year though, we (Hitchwiki) would need help of editors to fix the planned merging of Hitchwiki and Hitchwiki maps. - hmm... I don't quite know what kind of work that involves. Also I don't know where I will be in relation to computers later this year :-) as to rating the crossability, I would vote for doing it anyway and finding a contingency for those special cases. I'd probably just either not rate same-side stations or rate them with the same symbol as a direct bridge or tunnel. then I'd have a second symbol for having to use an access road, and a symbol for not crossable. green, yellow, red. the really complicated ones I'd not rate, but explain in text. I'm not familiar with Voralpenkreuz, but just looking at OSM, where would you even want to cross to there? :-) but I get yarr point. --Zenit (talk) 19:43, 27 September 2015 (CEST)
- For one sided stations for both directions crossability is not relevant as they can always be crossed, but on average the hitchability is about one class higher on the side the station is actually on. Generally to be avoided if possible though ;). Got your point too, thanks. For now, would continue as before, keeping in mind to 1. add the ones that can't be crossed the list, 2. add dots for crossability and 3. add numbers of nearest exits (which I've started for the page of France) as these will help a lot to look up the right stations (although that info is included on Wikipedia pages and Motorway exit lists). Shall we keep it like this for now? Or actually, if you like to, you could if you have time and would be up for it add the info under points 1 and 3. As it is, I actually wonder if the by-country gas station crossability lists are really necessary if we just integrated crossability & the detailed information on how to into the exit lists (it's quite perfect, because afaik the exit list tables have an empty box in between the respective gas stations anyway). On the other hand side of course it'd be a pity to just get rid of them after all the work you've put into them. Maybe keep them as country-overviews on all the highway gas stations rather than just for crossability?--Zenit (talk) 14:28, 28 September 2015 (CEST)
- Great pictograms! Not all Euro motorways are listed on Hitchwiki's exit pages, e.g. those in the UK, Spain, Slovakia, Hungary and Lithuania are not. Am not motivated to create those. Transform crossability pages into completely lists with all stations - perhaps we'll see. Not all exit lists have an empty box between them, in some the stations are in the central column. Guess those are the "one side, serving both directions" stations - so it's all still perfect. Anyway here is the bottom line - I'm not going to spend days and days on this, although I do, so I just do, when I want to. But in Spain I got some problems and need some talk to hitchhikers, who have experience in Spain. * GeorgDerReisende (talk) 12:01, 29 September 2015 (CEST) counts kilometers from west to north and counts kilometers from north to west, and for parts they are parallel and for parts they change from one to another. How I can connect them? * Is there a need to write up all motorways around Madrid? They build a web, where I cannot see through. * At some motorways the service stations or private petrol stations reside on 20 kilometers long sideroads. Are these important for hitchhiking? --
- I'm not familiar with hh-ing in Spain and can't advise you on this. As for the crossability lists, I am not sure if I will make one for Spain given my personal interest and since apparently the density of service stations in Spain is higher than in other countries. I've noticed that the motorway exit lists on Hitchwiki are linked to on some country pages (Germany), but not on all of them. - AFAIK, Spanish hitch-hikers don't have central online communication channels.
