Resemblance to WikiTravel

Hello! Whatever you did worked. There's now no resemblance, so no problem!

Robin Patterson 03:46, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Okay! Cool :) Guaka 08:41, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

That apostrophe

To save making you look twice, here's another thought I've had:

I see some recent moves probably related to standardising your apostrophe placement in "Hitchhikers". I've not looked to see how it all ended up.

But there's still a problem, as of a few minutes ago. Your main article namespace - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=0 - contains pages that start with "Hitchhikers' Guide to Hitchhiking:". If they were redirects to matching "project" namespace pages - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=4 - that start with "Hitchhiker's Guide to Hitchhiking:", no problem. But they are not. That namespace is practically unused.

You do know, I suppose, that you can type "project:" and let the software sort out the long prefix?

No I didn't. :)

So I suggest that you grab those "s-apostrophe" pages and Move them all to the corresponding "project:" page if that's what you meant for them (which you probably did, as they are "About" and "Why this wiki?", etc).

Sort of did that now. Hope it's awrite now. Guaka 08:41, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Anarchopedia

Hoj Guaka. Maybe you want to check what I am doing on this page Anarchopedia:Hitchhiking Wiki datadump, basically the same as what was done with infoAnarchy wiki. I think it is useful to have redundancy, so that the content stays should one website go offline for any reason. I am not sure how many articles to move, I think I will just start with the ones I find most interesting. Rev 22 21:48, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, redundancy can be good, but it can also lead to double work. Can you contact me by mail? kas per DOT sou ren AROBASE gmail PUNTO com. There's always Google cache if one website is offline for a bit. Guaka 23:42, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
My initial idea was not to move all data, just the most interesting and relevant. Relevant data attracts users, and eventually contributors. Every article will link to articles on this project so the score search engine for it will increase. Google cache is not reliable as a backup, except for reasonably popular articles in popular websites, but even then recreating mediawiki code from cached data (html) is a suboptimal solution (except if formatted text is all you care about). great stuff

This is really nice work. Let me know if you would like us to promote in via the wikia spotlight when you're ready. You should also talk to bill on http://World.wikia.com about cross-linking! Gil (talk) 15:11, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note - I believe Bill added you to World Wikia
As for ads, I know they are a bit annoying, but we use 100% of the ad revenue to pay for our servers and bandwith (and still lose money) so I hope you understand that we need to cover our costs. Given our topics are more fun and less "educational" than Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales decided that we would not easily get donations, so he made Wikia a commercial business. We could put the ads on the top of the page instead of the right hand side if you found that easier on your eyes :-). World had an that made us take them off temporarily, I expect they'll be back as soon as the engineers have time to quickly fix the code. Also, I couldn't tell from your comment if you wanted your wiki promoted in the spotlight. Thanks! Gil (talk) 22:59, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I like it!..

I just fuckin like this wiki - nearly as much as I like hitchhiking... :-) --Speckmade 18:04, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Moving help

What do you need? Zactalk 00:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Some things:

  • When the next Wikia database dump is imported at hitchwiki.org I want to go through all pages, check if they are the same on both sites and place the {{moved}} template at Wikia. It would be great to have some help with that. The next database dump will probably be available on the 27th of November.
  • A cool logo!
  • Let's write a project:Thanks to Wikia for hosting. GuakaTalkCS 01:04, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

confused...

hitchhikingguide.org? hitchhiking.wikia.org? world.wikia.org? hitchwiki.org?

Can you please tell (maybe at a prominent place) about what is now what, what is related to what in which way?

This Wiki moved from hitchhikingguide.org to hitchhiking.wikia.org - and then? to hitchwiki.org? Is this now the official, persistent version, hte version to edit? What happened to hitchhiking.wikia.org? What is that world.wikia.org it now redirects to? (Seems like it serves exactly the same purpose like Wikitravel... Where does it come from?)

Why does it show me my old userpage here and complains when I try to log in here, that there is no user of that name? Do I have to recreate an account here?

Questions over questions that I've not been able to answer completely on my own... --Speckmade 17:50, 12 Dec 2006 (UTC)

The wiki recently move from hitchhiking.wikia.org to hitchwiki.org. We transfered all the pages (including userpages) to here, but unfortunately, wikia doesn't let one export user-accounts, so you will have to register here again. wikia made the old url redirect to world.wikia.com, and we can do nothing about that. This seems to confuse a lot of people :(. Anyway, now we have our own domain and own databases, so the wiki will stay here forever :) --MrTweek 21:34, 12 December 2006 (CET)
