Using the map on your profile

Hi Kasper, I liked the map on your profile a lot, the one saying where you lived, traveled, and hitched. I went and copied it into my own page, I hope you don't mind. If you do, please let me know, I'll remove it :)

Cheers, Gerben

ridiculous!

Haha I love the new page of Nonsense. Essential reading.

that would be nice!

It is going to be too many weekends before I unexpectedly turn up there again, I miss it already.. along with the Casa! Kalgoorlie is worlds apart. I suspect the separation will soon drive me to kick off some sort of collective down here :) lets see. Its fun to edit Hitchwiki, hehe! re:how to ask for precision in an article

thanks for answering! yep, i know that, but does it mean i have to check all the versions ? (there s no clear indication about this specific change). plus many of them are from visitors (just IP). Or should i ask somewhere/someone else? if so,the "discussion" page for budapest seems most appropriate (more precise than the forum), but doesnt seem very active. P.S.: same as Rocky : should i talk on your page or mine? are you notified when i answer you on my talk page? thanks! Stupidfrog 11:18, 7 October 2008 (CEST)

re:Highways

no problem, i'll try to find a good picture of me and my friend hitching on a highway in France.

P.S.: is this the right way to do wikitalk? wiki's are kinda new to me ;) --Rocky 15:03, 18 September 2008 (CEST)

Great, pictures are very welcome! Yeah, writing on someone's talk page will inform them about that. Usually it's added at the end of the page, but anyway, I should archive all the old stuff that's on my talk page. guakasite, wikitalk 16:47, 18 September 2008 (CEST)

Resemblance to WikiTravel

Hello! Whatever you did worked. There's now no resemblance, so no problem!

Robin Patterson 03:46, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Okay! Cool :) Guaka 08:41, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

That apostrophe

To save making you look twice, here's another thought I've had:

I see some recent moves probably related to standardising your apostrophe placement in "Hitchhikers". I've not looked to see how it all ended up.

But there's still a problem, as of a few minutes ago. Your main article namespace - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=0 - contains pages that start with "Hitchhikers' Guide to Hitchhiking:". If they were redirects to matching "project" namespace pages - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=4 - that start with "Hitchhiker's Guide to Hitchhiking:", no problem. But they are not. That namespace is practically unused.

You do know, I suppose, that you can type "project:" and let the software sort out the long prefix?

No I didn't. :)

So I suggest that you grab those "s-apostrophe" pages and Move them all to the corresponding "project:" page if that's what you meant for them (which you probably did, as they are "About" and "Why this wiki?", etc).

Robin Patterson 03:46, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Sort of did that now. Hope it's awrite now. Guaka 08:41, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Anarchopedia

Hoj Guaka. Maybe you want to check what I am doing on this page Anarchopedia:Hitchhiking Wiki datadump, basically the same as what was done with infoAnarchy wiki. I think it is useful to have redundancy, so that the content stays should one website go offline for any reason. I am not sure how many articles to move, I think I will just start with the ones I find most interesting. Rev 22 21:48, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, redundancy can be good, but it can also lead to double work. Can you contact me by mail? kas per DOT sou ren AROBASE gmail PUNTO com. There's always Google cache if one website is offline for a bit. Guaka 23:42, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
My initial idea was not to move all data, just the most interesting and relevant. Relevant data attracts users, and eventually contributors. Every article will link to articles on this project so the score search engine for it will increase. Google cache is not reliable as a backup, except for reasonably popular articles in popular websites, but even then recreating mediawiki code from cached data (html) is a suboptimal solution (except if formatted text is all you care about). great stuff

This is really nice work. Let me know if you would like us to promote in via the wikia spotlight when you're ready. You should also talk to bill on http://World.wikia.com about cross-linking! Gil (talk) 15:11, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note - I believe Bill added you to World Wikia
As for ads, I know they are a bit annoying, but we use 100% of the ad revenue to pay for our servers and bandwith (and still lose money) so I hope you understand that we need to cover our costs. Given our topics are more fun and less "educational" than Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales decided that we would not easily get donations, so he made Wikia a commercial business. We could put the ads on the top of the page instead of the right hand side if you found that easier on your eyes :-). World had an that made us take them off temporarily, I expect they'll be back as soon as the engineers have time to quickly fix the code. Also, I couldn't tell from your comment if you wanted your wiki promoted in the spotlight. Thanks! Gil (talk) 22:59, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

confused...

hitchhikingguide.org? hitchhiking.wikia.com? world.wikia.org? hitchwiki.org?

Can you please tell (maybe at a prominent place) about what is now what, what is related to what in which way?

This Wiki moved from hitchhikingguide.org to hitchhiking.wikia.com - and then? to hitchwiki.org? Is this now the official, persistent version, hte version to edit? What happened to hitchhiking.wikia.org? What is that world.wikia.org it now redirects to? (Seems like it serves exactly the same purpose like Wikitravel... Where does it come from?)

Why does it show me my old userpage here and complains when I try to log in here, that there is no user of that name? Do I have to recreate an account here?

Questions over questions that I've not been able to answer completely on my own... --Speckmade 17:50, 12 Dec 2006 (UTC)

The wiki recently move from hitchhiking.wikia.org to hitchwiki.org. We transfered all the pages (including userpages) to here, but unfortunately, wikia doesn't let one export user-accounts, so you will have to register here again. wikia made the old url redirect to world.wikia.com, and we can do nothing about that. This seems to confuse a lot of people :(. Anyway, now we have our own domain and own databases, so the wiki will stay here forever :) --MrTweek 21:34, 12 December 2006 (CET)

Copyright violation

Grr. There's a Associated Press story syndicated all over the world today, and it says that "World Wikia has resources on how to hitchhike out of Tokyo." Guess what? That's my article, which I licensed to Wikitravel, and which you copied to World Wikia and HitchWiki.org with no attribution of any kind.

Now yes, I did dual-license the content as GFDL, but you're not following the conditions of the license:

B. List on the Title Page, as authors, one or more persons or entities responsible for authorship of the modifications in the Modified Version, together with at least five of the principal authors of the Document (all of its principal authors, if it has fewer than five), unless they release you from this requirement.

I expect a major apology from you, and please remove every last word of my content you've copied here or elsewhere unless you can figure out a way to do what you're supposed to do according to the license: credit the author(s). Also remember that, for other Wikitravel content, GFDL and CC by-sa are not compatible. 59.161.79.82 05:38, 20 December 2006 (CET) (wikitravel:User:Jpatokal)

Ok, I'm very sorry. I know CC-BY-SA and GFDL aren't compatible, and I see that I made a mistake when I copied the text without a more specific mention.
I saw your other edits on this wiki. I hope Tokyo and Japan are okay on this wiki now? Guaka 13:27, 20 December 2006 (CET)
On this wiki, yes, apology accepted. But please review your contributions of my content to World Wikia. 61.246.40.184 18:58, 20 December 2006 (CET) (Jpatokal)

Mapping locations -- Google Maps?

Hi!

I'm sure you know that Google has recently opend up their API in Google Maps just a little, allowing you to create and share locations/KML (shapes, points and lines) created via the Google Maps interface. I realize that another system is being used on various articles in Wikipedia (to tell you the truth, I can't find such an article right now -- if you know what I'm talking about, could you point me in the right direction?). Have you considered this issue on hitchwiki.org? I.e., should we stick to one solution for providing on-line mapping of coordinates for hitching places? Has such a solution already been implemented? Ideally, such a solution should be open, editable and transparent. I've added a link to a Google Maps point I have created for Janki, a popular hitching spot in Warsaw. The problem is that the point is not editable by anyone besides me (of course, anyone may simply change the link.) What are your thoughts on this? Also, what would be a more appropriate place to post such questions, so that all the editors may read and comment on the issue? (Still new here).

Pozdraw, Arthur

At the moment, we use to add direct links to www.liftershalte.info to articles, and mark the hitching spots there. Liftershalte.info is based on google maps, created by me and hosted on the same Server as hitchwiki.
I'm planning to add the possibility to include liftershalte-maps directly into hitchwiki-articles, but this doesn't seem to be trivial and I don't have much time at the moment, so it could take a while to implement this.

got plenty !! how do i upload them ?? just had a 12 hour shift so my brain is maybe functioning at a less impressive level than it should... i got one uploaded to the Choum page but it's full size and not thumbnailed...

Awesome! I added some formatting to the Choum picture. Check it out, but don't worry too much about that. Usually, if you provide some information about location and such, someone will add it to some pages on this wiki :) and if you add it yourself without formatting, someone (often me, or Philipp) will make it look nice. Review

Hi thanks for that, I was just feeling a bit lost with all the structure and on how to get back into the writing. Especially as matter to keep my writings systematic, but also maybe to ensure a certain similarity of the information throughout the various cities and countries? We keep in touch about that! I definitely can make some entry for Djibouti! Maplefanta 00:15, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Pleasure and no worries, for most of them I tried to make some equal adjustment between the various pages. I will still work in it. I seem to mainly have a problem of finding a structure to follow when I start a new page. Maplefanta 02:55, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Hitchwiki Maps Questions

Hi guaka. I have some questions about Hitchwiki maps. I was searching through, but i couldn't find any up date info. First of all is it possible to edit other users spots. There is many roads being built or rebuilt in Poland recently and there are more and more spots that need or will need some updates or even removal. Second is how can I set my home position other than Paris, maybe I'm blind;) but couldn't find it. Third, I see there are changes in the maps in city pages. No more thumb symbols with rating. Any reasons why? Any recent talk page about? Thanx for any help. Greets! --Paluch 17:30, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

French version

Hi Guaka hoe gaat het? I would like to make changes in the interface of the french wiki (spelling and translation, begining with this ugly Acceuil instead of accueil). I guess that it is required to become an admin to do that. So can I become one? Otherwise I could also ask you to do the changes if you have time;) --Kimdime69 22:19, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

And help me to understand why my adaptation of the countries template fr:Modèle:Infobox Pays doesn't work (for exemple {{langue}} displayed even if the information is fullfiled) Cheers.--Kimdime69 23:54, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

bork

I will edit personal page. I am planning to do that on Wikipedia for a long time but somehow I love to be nobody who is contributing to the community. Plus you look like guy who picked me up in Germany (500 km with him) You are exactly the same xDDDD

Plus plus I didn't notice how to put personal comments so I just added them to he articles because I think there are very useful to the exciting ones as little improvment. For example you have Duisburg where I stucked and if somebody have written that Düsseldorf is just few Euros away I wouldn't sleep on gas station that night etc...

Wikitravel

TODO: move to FAQ :)

Why doesnt hitchwiki work together with wikitravel? It seems to me senseless that there are two wiki sites with city-like pages. -- 11:03, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Practical answer: Wikitravel is owned and controlled by a company, they put ads on the site and you can't download the database dump (I've asked for this, even before Wikitravel was sold out to Internet Brands). This is quite different from how we want to keep Hitchwiki.
Content related answer: 1. I don't think Wikitravel would want to include extended information about hitchhike spots inside cities. 2. Hitchhikers are often not tourists.
There are probably some more good reasons I can come up with... Nevertheless, Wikitravel is using the same CC-BY-SA license now, so feel free to copy text back and forth :) guaka 11:19, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
I understand all that but still it seems to me pointless, to spread out user generated traveling sites. Have a nice day. -- 15:13, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Hitchhiking is not a method of travelling, but a method of transportation. Wikitravel would not want as detailed information as we have, and our information is exclusively about hitchhiking. --MrTweek 15:49, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Well not exclusively, we do have information about where to sleep, but we would never have information about 5 star hotels in articles here, or about museums and fancy restaurants and information about rock bottom budget food kinda moved to Trashwiki :) guaka 16:05, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

West Gate shopping center

How do u know its quite a hike from shopping center till pay-toll? its no more than 500m Luka85 20:36, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

I was staying with a local hitchhiker. Then I actually was there yesterday afternoon. It's a hike if you take the bridge. It's still a bit of a hike to cross the channel, not far... Will add my experiences later, with pics :) guaka 20:52, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Yep, archaeology, and yes, through CS. guaka 17:27, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

And how long did u wait on pay-tolls and till when did u got ur first ride? Luka85 18:23, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Pay tolls were not as great as e.g. in France. After 25 minutes or so with many many cars passing, mostly ignoring us, two trucks stopped. The Belgian dudes who were standing 100 meters further, right before the trucks, didn't bother to walk there. So after 1 minute I ran there and arranged a ride for me and Erga to the border. We had to split up between the trucks but since it was only a short distance, and some German was spoken by the Turkish truckers we were okay with that. guaka 21:04, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Didnt catch u with the belgian guys, they managed to stop turkish truck drivers before they arrived to pay-toll? Luka85 21:21, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Oh no, we were all right after the toll booths. The 2 trucks stopped. I was signalling the Belgians to go check if they can get a ride with them, but they didn't bother. So I went myself and scored the ride. guaka 21:38, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Re: Money

Yeah no prob! But do tell me, what would you like to be added? I myself am home now, after a long hitch from Norway to Spain, starting with 0.00 in my pocket! So I can say I'm a bit experienced with hitching with no money. I'm not really sure what to add to the article at the moment, since it still seems in it's early early stages, but if there's anything you're unsure but feel I may know, I'm MORE than happy to contribute!

But for now I'll make a short section on hitching without a dime. Edit as you seem appropiate!

Do you know where the Talk page is for the standard city template? I don't think we even have guidelines here, somehow it just worked fine without guidelines - but that shouldn't stop anyone from starting them ;) There are pages like Hitchwiki:How we want to keep Hitchwiki though :) guaka 19:19, 13 November 2010 (CET)

Admin?

Hey, Kasper,
I was wondering if you could possibly give me the sysop rights? I've been contributing for a longish time, I know my way around wikis and stuff, and for all it's worth I'm still an admin on Wikipedia even though I don't regularly contribute there. I know there's already quite a few sysops around, but I don't think one more can do any harm, and besides, there's a new spam article at the moment that's been around for almost four hours without anybody removing it ;-) cheers--Zenit 22:16, 26 May 2011 (CEST)

I just promoted you. Thanks for the good work so far :) --MrTweek 22:34, 26 May 2011 (CEST)
Awesome :) guaka 23:39, 26 May 2011 (CEST)
Thanks, guys :-)--Zenit 00:19, 27 May 2011 (CEST)

/community

You mentioned /community on CS today, though I could not seem to log in with my Hitchwiki credentials. I get an error page with Wordpress headlines... --Quitelost 09:59, 5 September 2011 (CEST)

It worked for me yesterday but I passed your message to Platschi, who has set up the thing. Can you paste (part of) the error page here? guaka 10:31, 5 September 2011 (CEST)
I end up at http://hitchwiki.org/community/wp-login.php with "ERROR: Invalid username. Lost your password?". Trying to request password with my Hitchwiki email gives me "no user registered with that email". Maybe it's just my account... Quitelost 10:40, 5 September 2011 (CEST)
How do you write your Username? With a capital Q? I think there was a problem like this. Try to use a capital Q, if you didn't already do so. --MrTweek 11:16, 5 September 2011 (CEST)
Yes, ofcourse. No lowercase usernames (or page titles) in Mediawiki. Should've remembered that. Thanks. Quitelost
We should find a better solution though. Either fix it or mention this issue at http://hitchwiki.org/community/wp-login.php - I went through the code but unfortunately wp_check_password is only given a user ID, not the username. guaka 11:53, 5 September 2011 (CEST)
I fixed it by overriding get_user_by() :) guaka 12:04, 5 September 2011 (CEST)
So probably that's why I didn't managed to reproduce it now, great work :) quitelost 12:12, 5 September 2011 (CEST)

Hey !

You're welcome :-) This wiki has been quite useful to me during my last trip. It's the last I can do ! I took some notes about hitchhiking spots during my trip, but I can't find it right now. I'm quite of a day dreamer, so I make a lot of stupid mistakes (even being used to the mediawiki system). Don't be surprised... BadWolf

Thanks for giving back! Mistakes are no problem at all on an active wiki like this one, usually someone will jump in and fix things :) guaka 09:13, 24 November 2011 (CET)
Allright then! I did knew about the signature thing. But, of course, I forgot, as usual :P Have a good day ! BadWolf 09:21, 24 November 2011 (CET)

Deleting spam/spammers

When you block a spammer and delete the crap they put up, change the "Content was: ..." to just "Spam", don't keep any URLs visible in the change log (after all, that's what they want...) Prino 07:56, 13 December 2011 (CET)

Would be good if there's an extension for this stuff. I've actually been playing with a semi-automated approach of handling spam on cultwiki, we could try that out here. guaka 08:20, 13 December 2011 (CET)

Jerusalem experience

Since you have quite some experience with the area, I'd like to draw your attention to my recent edit on the Talk page for Jerusalem. CRCulver 19:00, 1 January 2012 (CET)

Template:Infobox Country

Can you have a look at this. I've tried adding clickable links to XE for the currency, so that people can check what they will be paying, but the text after the second & seems to disappear. Also, for currency = USD it would be nice to only give EUR and for EUR only USD. Prino 18:24, 19 May 2012 (CEST)

Couldn't quickly get this to work. I suspect that the link don't allow variables somehow. Or it could be that upgrading to latest MW might fix this? guaka 01:00, 20 May 2012 (CEST)

hey i'm sorry, is this how i uh reply to a message? i am not online too often, a friend showed me this website and i figured i'd make an exception i think it's real cool what yall are doin here , demystifying hitchhiking, i think i have some pretty cool stuff to contribute but man i don't know how to do all this stuff so, if you could tell me whatcha meant in your message, i don't see what you changed

New extension

Kasper,

If you delete spammers, use Recent Changes Cleanup to hide your changes, so that the Change Log stay neat and tidy. Prino 11:55, 27 August 2012 (CEST)

Digihitch

I inquired a little further and it seems like fruup is basically running the site right now but is more or less just "sitting on it" unable to commit a decent amount of time to it. He offered to get me in touch with Morgan's family to basically take over the reigns to the site. Problem is I lack the technical know how and knowledge of the vision that Morgan's family may have for the site. Please email me back: [email protected]; I have a lot of ideas and a lot of free time to commit, but no outlet to apply it to.Thewindandrain 02:09, 24 September 2012 (CEST)

Erga photo

Why did you put a photo of Erga hitchhiking to Bucharest on the page for Bucharest? I would think it more appropriate on the page of whatever city she was hitchhiking out of at the time. CRCulver 19:07, 26 September 2012 (CEST)

True, but I don't remember from where it was :) Added similar pictures to articles like that. Also, it could be a starting point for a Hitching in section ;) guaka 22:02, 26 September 2012 (CEST)

Rendering of SVG flags

For some reason the flags of Spain and Portugal no longer render, see, among others, Europe. Can you have a look? Prino (talk) 12:39, 14 October 2012 (CEST)

Edit conflict

Have been talking to User:‎Strazdas007 on Skype. Whatever he tries to edit will end, when he saves it with an "Editing conflict". I initially blocked him as his name is pretty spammy, but unbloced him later when he contacted me, and he was able to create his page yesterday, but right now he's completely stuck. Can you have a look at what's going on? He cannot even edit your talk page! Prino (talk) 21:08, 24 October 2012 (CEST)

Spam page deletion problem

I cannot delete two spam pages, one on the German and one on the Russian wiki. In both cases the error is

A database error has occurred. Did you forget to run maintenance/update.php after upgrading? See: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading#Run_the_update_script Query: INSERT INTO `archive` (ar_namespace,ar_title,ar_comment,ar_user,ar_user_text,ar_timestamp,ar_minor_edit,ar_rev_id,ar_parent_id,ar_text_id,ar_text,ar_flags,ar_len,ar_page_id,ar_deleted,ar_sha1) SELECT page_namespace,page_title,rev_comment,rev_user,rev_user_text,rev_timestamp,rev_minor_edit,rev_id,rev_parent_id,rev_text_id,,,rev_len,page_id,rev_deleted,rev_sha1 FROM `page`,`revision` WHERE page_id = '2044' AND (page_id = rev_page) Function: WikiPage::doDeleteArticleReal Error: 1054 Unknown column 'ar_sha1' in 'field list' (127.0.0.1)

Can you have a look at it.

Also, on both Monobook CSS does not give me the normal "delete" tab at the top of the page. Prino (talk) 12:58, 7 November 2012 (CET)

Deleting spam in German wiki impossible

Please do something about this, there's yet another spam page on the German wiki. Prino (talk) 20:18, 22 November 2012 (CET)

Fixed the database issue and deleted two spam pages. Thanks for your alertness! guaka (talk) 15:08, 23 November 2012 (CET)
Same issue on the Russian one, and there are two spam pages Roth and Kilpatrick217. You might also want to check the other languages for the same problem... Also, using the monobook CSS, you cannot delete anything (de and ru, and possibly others) - I'm sorry to say, but I personally loathe the new "Hitchwiki" css... Prino (talk) 16:46, 23 November 2012 (CET)

Floods of spammers

If you look at the Polish recent changes for 2012-12-24, you will see that there were 12 bogus registrations in just 7 minutes. Can we please do something about this. There must be a way to link them to specific IP addresses, and although it may hit innocent bystandes, maybe we should start blocking more than just the single IP address, and directly go for 255, i.e. aaa.bbb.ccc.*

I might also be useful to remove the ability to register on any of the non-English wiki's - just put up a note that "due to whatever...." people must register on the English one, but can then login on any of the others as well.

Finally, why can't we make registration a manual process: people register, provide an email address, and one of the Admins can activate the account. Clicking on something to activate them would take far less time than blocking them and then going via the Special Pages to the Recent Changes Cleanup to hide two entries in the change log... Prino (talk) 00:43, 25 November 2012 (CET)

Sorry about Gn0m on the German wiki - stupid username anyway...
As for blocking spammers, these RegExp's should stop quite a few:
  • [A-Z][a-z]*[A-Z][a-z]{2},
  • [A-Z][a-z]*[A-F][0-9], and
  • [A-Za-z]*[0-9]{4}
They should not give any error message, but just silently ignore the registration. Anything with more than two 'x'es should also be ignored. Prino (talk) 18:31, 28 November 2012 (CET)
Wtf? Again, can you please stop banning users as long as they don't make any problems? I don't care who many dead spamming accounts we have. As long as they don't spam, they don't do any harm at all. Then again, every other week a genuine user is blocked which DOES cause harm. And insulting our users in public for no reason (stupid username anyway...') is not exactly a behaviour I want to see here. --MrTweek(talk) 23:14, 28 November 2012 (CET)

CSS: Hitchwiki vs Monobook differences (Bug!)

If you go to my summary table page, you will see that it contains three tables. Using the Monobook CSS they all behave as expected, i.e. they can be sorted without any problems. Now switch to the new (and IMHO ever so annoying "New and now washes even whiter") Hitchwiki CSS, and suddenly the tables are no longer sortable, and the nice little sort arrows do not even appear on the country and month tables anymore.

Can someone skilled in the art figure out what's going on? Thanks, Prino (talk) 21:38, 26 December 2012 (CET)

I guess some JavaScript is not included with the Hitchwiki theme. I just asked Mikael if he has any idea. If he doesn't I can take a better look at this. guaka (talk) 23:46, 26 December 2012 (CET)
