yeah, the borders around here make going to the Himalayas a serious problem! I was wondering about the long way around thru Laos, Thailand, then getting a boat to India and from there hitchhiking up north to the holy mountains, but you gave a new idea that I was not aware of: going thru Kyrgyzstan! But still, where would I go after? Tajikistan -> Pakistan and finally India?
: It's been almost 5 years since I've been in the area, but as far as I know it is still possible to cross from Kashgar (Kashi) into Pakistan via Karakorum highway. This is probably the shortest and most practical way at the moment.
: Back then it was impossible to pass through Burma over land. I hear that is slowly changing, but I don't have current information about this. And it would be much further too.
: From Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan the only ways south would be through Afghanistan (not sure if a good idea atm) or Turkmenistan (hard to get a visa and a huge detour too).
