Welcome and Ideas

Hi Salman! Welcome to this wiki and thanks for adding and correcting some stuff! I'll probably hitchhiking a bit in North America some time soon. Guaka 18:55, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey! Great! I didn't know you were "webmaster and co-editor" of digihitch! It would be great to find ways to cooperate a bit more. I'll add an easy way for linking to Digihitch. Also, we could do something like what I'm doing on CouchSurfing. Check this. I'm also trying to create an auto-login for CS users, so that they can edit with their CS user name. And then there's the Google Maps thing MrTweek is working on. It would be great if we can integrate all these things and ideas :)

You can now use links like [[digi:featured_salman.html]] to create a nice link to Digihitch in the left pane. Or links like [[:digi:usa-map.html]] to create links in the text, e.g. USA map at Digihitch. Guaka 00:36, 2 December 2006 (CET)

Thanks for the welcome and glad to know Hitchwiki has a strong support team to give it a good start! I hope we can meet when you are in the USA, Guaka. I am in Phoenix, Arizona. Let me know if you come through... nice weather until May.
It would be great to meet you, but I'm in New Zealand, and generally heading North West until I reach Europe. Maybe I'll be in the US for next Burning Man :)

Couchsurfing Geocoding

As coder of the digihitch engine, I would be glad to create more ways to promote Hitchwiki from our pages. As we do for Hospitality Club, we can probably link to each hitchwiki page within our digihitch World pages-- take the Netherlands page as an example. HC is promoted as an icon near the top left of the page and goes directly to the HC Netherlands travel page. I also wanted to integrate CouchSurfing with digihitch and mentioned this to Casey, but as of yet CS does not allow direct linking to countries. With your wiki this may now be possible!
Cool. I just created a bug in the CS bug tracker for this.
Glad to see your request. This is a feature that CS has been sorely missing! Salman 08:30, 4 December 2006 (CET)

Hitchhiking points on the map

I have experience integrating Google Maps into the site with php, so let me know if you need any tips. I use php/mysql to accomplish this, initializing the maps within the head code. Digihitch World was built from the ground up, so I know the code intimately.
Check http://www.liftershalte.info done by MrTweek. Maybe you can avoid doing work twice? :)
A little description is available at Liftershalte.info. It is also built with PHP and MySQL. For what are you using google maps? anything that we could link/combine/merge? :) --MrTweek 16:23, 3 December 2006 (CET)
Nice work so far on liftershalte.info! Are you in contact with Markus at hitchbase.com to share all submitted exit points from that website? digihitch.com has also had the goal of listing all locations on the map. I began with Google Maps API earlier this year and right now we use it to show truckstops in US States (see Arizona, for example), hostels in cities (see Berlin hostels page) general maps for cities that have mapped routes (such as the new New Zealand maps). If we can get all of us hitchhiking webmasters working together, maybe we can release an xml version of our work to other websites that has multi-language, map-based hitchhiking exit points that can be plugged into others' maps. Just a thought that we can discuss on a different page at another time. I will follow your development in the meantime. Salman 08:30, 4 December 2006 (CET)
The problem with hitchbase is, that it has no coordinates for the places, so this data would be useless for liftershalte.info. Exporting the data to xml would very easy. I planned to let the users export it to kml or some similar format. --MrTweek 11:47, 4 December 2006 (CET)
Glad to hear you are thinking ahead with sharing data. That has been the hardest part for us hitchhikers so far-- no standardization. Jasper from hitchhikers.org began working with an xml feed for shared rides, but I have not followed up with him on that yet. It is just another example that all of us would do well to think while we develop: How can I share this data with other hitchhiker developers so they can integrate it with their tools? Now that google maps api has such great free tools, hitchbase would do well to add an entry field for lat/lon coordinates, so that everything can be shown on the map at some point. I am sure there are enough volunteers willing to geocode old entries, too.
I am working on other projects now (mainly, Hitchhiker Road Guides on digihitch, but will check with you in a few months to see how we can maybe work together or at least share more ideas on a hitchhiker mapping project for the global community. Salman 12:36, 11 December 2006 (CET)
I contacted the guys from hitchbase, and will contact some more owner of smaller hitching databases, to see, wether they want to work together with us. My idea is to have a common pool if data for hitchbase, hitchwiki and liftershalte and maybe some more. As far as I see, you don't have no such data on digihitch, but I'm sure, there are enough other things that could be standardised and exchanged :) --MrTweek 15:41, 12 December 2006 (CET)
On digihitch we have truckstops mapped on many US pages (Arizona, for one) and plan to offer this data and similar stuff through an xml feed soon. I'm still working on a new submission form for city exit points and other hitchhiking sites where digihitch users can enter coordinates. If you have ideas for other areas of digihitch that can be fed, let me know!
Looking forward to contributing more in the months ahead. Good job so far!

I'm excited about that! Guaka 23:19, 2 December 2006 (CET)

"Excerpts"

"If you believe digihitch has more sections and resources that should be mentioned on Hitchwiki, go ahead and add them yourself! Make sure to credit digihitch.com whenever you excerpt our content, or credit the original source found on our pages." Does that mean that it's okay to copy from Digihitch? Did you ever consider using a free license for (parts of) Digihitch?

We are working to add more creative commons licenses to certain parts of our content. digihitch World will have its descriptive content be so, and I have been creating U.S. Road Laws pocket guides to go along with the Hitchhiking Phrasebooks that can be reproduced and modified freely. At this time we do not allow anyone to copy whole pages of digihitch content and place them on their own site, but we will not make trouble for anyone who takes a few sentences or a paragraph from digihitch.com and shares more about it, as long as they tell their visitors the info was found on digihitch.

And, I noticed that some parts on digihitch (e.g. on the China page) are copied from Wikitravel, without any mention of the CC-BY-SA license. That could be a problem at some point.

Thanks for telling me this. We link to wikitravel whenever we use part of their content, but I will need to change my format to give proper credit according to the license.

Something else: do you know what happened to the founder of the original Hitchhiker's Guide to Hitchhiking? I would like to thank him for starting the whole thing. Especially now that it's finally becoming really cool! Guaka 12:57, 4 December 2006 (CET)

Teppo Moisio is the originator of the hitchhiking wiki at hitchhikingguide.org and also one of the founders of Liftari.org, a Finnish hitchhiking website. Teppo has had some great things to say about the purpose of a hitchhiking wiki. I do recommend you speak with him and share ideas. He would be very glad to see you making such great use of the concept! Salman 12:24, 11 December 2006 (CET)

Hitchhiking Zine

Hey Salman. I was wondering if you had any objections to parts of digihitch being included in the Hitchhiking Zine. I'm sure you've already checked it out. Some countries (like Belgium, for example) don't have a lot of content here so for some sections I'd like to use digihitch content, as well as other resources that I am gathering now. I'd give credit of course, as I will for everything in the zine. It's also non-profit. I'm planning to start a publishing project soon and I'm going to release copies over that if I can, but I am only going to charge for supplies and shipping as well as include a free download-and-print version. If that's okay with you, let me know. Thanks a lot. Zactalk 05:09, 9 March 2007 (CET)

Categories

Hi! Your user page category has been changed to Category:Hitchhikers in the United States because from now on this (along with the old Category:Hitchhikers) will be a standard categorization for hitchhikers on hitchwiki.org (see this discussion here for the reasons of doing so). If for some reason you don't want to be categorized by country, feel free to delete country category on your page leaving only a standard Category:Hitchhikers. We hope you don't mind, though.

Happy hitching,

The hitchwiki team
