MrTweek hitching to Vienna

Wien (Vienna in English, Bécs in Hungarian) is the capital of Austria.

Hitching in

please add some tipps

Hitching Out

Vienna towards Salzburg and Munich, Take the U4 to Hütteldorf, Go out towards the Hadekgasse (left) and walk left again, then you are right on the main road leading out of Vienna towards Linz, Salzburg, Munich. There is a bus station which is a well known hitching spot. Change cars (if necessary) at the rest areas in St. Pölten or Ansfelden.

Alternatively, you can go over the motoway via the bridge. Turn right there and you will find after ~ 1 km the Autohof Wien.

Vienna towards Prague Go from Handelskai by train to Kornneuburg. Coming out of the station turn left. Follow the main street, and after ca. 1 km turn left into a small living street. Cross the railway and walk further til you meet the motorway-bridge. Turn right and you are there.

Vienna towards Brno From central Wien take tram31 to the last station, Stammersdorf. On your right you will see the main street, Brünner Str (road nr. 7) on which you should continue straight (You will see a big Merkur supermarket, pass it) till another shopping center, about 300m further. Hitchike just after the entrance to the next shopping center parking. All the traffic to Brno passes here, but notice that many of them leave this road before the border and turn eastwards on some country roads, to get to the Slovakian highway. In case your driver continues after Brno, ask him to drop you on the Olimpia shopping center on the highway, from which there is a free bus to central Brno.

Vienna towards Bratislava, Budapest There is a gas station on the highway to Budapest, where you can easily find a ride to Bratislava or further into Slovakia. To get to this gas station by public transport you should get to Enkplatz (by Metro U3) and from there you can take bus number #76A to "Haidequerstraße". Then you just walk the Haidequerstraße to the north for a couple of minutes and you are at the gas station which is on the Autobahn A4 towards the east (Győr, Budapest).

When hitchhiking to Hungary, it is very recommended to stand in the entrance of the gas stations holding a sign and being visible to people on the road as well as the people coming to the gas station. That will stop a lot of nice and friendly Hungarian people.

Vienna towards Graz, Slovenia Take the free http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IkeaNearYouView?storeId=8&StoreName=store_voesendorf IKEA-Bus] from the Opera (Oper) to the SCS (Shopping City Süd) or the Badener Bahn (Costs 3,40 Euro) to Maria-Enzersdorf (Südstadt). Advantages: It goes more often and earlier in the morning than the bus. If you take the train, you can go to one station after Shopping City Sued, which is called Maria-Enzersdorf (Suedstadt). This one is closer to the actual entrance to the highway. You get out of the train, head the direction you came from, turn right by the end of the platform, cross the tracks, pass 100 m of wild grass and there is a curved street - youll see the signs.

Alternativly you can take public transport to Matzleinsdorfer Platz where the Triester Straße begins (Direction South-West). This road is very, very long but has got on-ramps onto the Autobahn heading South (Graz). Try hitching somewhere along this road or ask at gas stations.
