A lot of tourists are making the journey along the Western Highway, from Belize City towards the border with Guatemala. This road also passes the capital Belmopan (and the road to the south) as well as San Ignacio, so there are a fair number of vehicles.
It is about a twenty to thirty minute walk from the city centre to the edge of town, where the best hitching spots are for the Western Highway. The first place to try is at the roundabout with Central American Boulevard. Another option is to walk another ten minutes through the cemetery. A lot of the spots also double as bus stops. You should be able to get a ride within half an hour at the most.
