Spammers

And this will happen if we do not take preventative action against the spammers... Right now (2012-11-30T20.57) There are 31 on the en site, 1 on es, 5 on fr, 14 on de, 8 on ru, 5 on pt, 19 on pl and 13 on nl. I don't want to block real users, but Waar gehakt wordt, vallen spaanders... Get enough of these people long enough on the system and the damage may be rather more significant... And for what it's worth, they seem to be monitoring some pages as the format of some names is suddenly no longer matching one of the RegEx'es I suggested... Prino (talk) 20:57, 30 November 2012 (CET)

Mh, in that case, sorry. I thought we solved that problem for now. I'll look into that username regex'es as soon as I can. Unfortunately, I still don't have internet at home, that seems to be pretty difficult in this country. Hope I can work on hitchwiki properly again next year. --MrTweek(talk) 23:09, 3 December 2012 (CET)
Maybe BotScout can help, the amount of spammers is going through the roof... Prino (talk) 11:45, 31 July 2013 (CEST)

Mozilla Firefox Warnung

Moin, alles schick?

Persistent vandalism

Sorry for putting this at the top...

We are currently under a very persistent vandalism attack. Can you please prevent anonymous edit for at least a few days? The attack is nasty in that many pages are changed multiple times which makes it very hard to rollback all changes. Prino 08:30, 30 April 2011 (CEST)

I added a line to LocalSettings.php just now. I really hope we can keep Hitchwiki open though. guaka 13:22, 1 May 2011 (CEST)

could i get the right to block users and delete pages? thanks ... --N0id 19:50, 1 May 2011 (CEST)

Yep, done --MrTweek 00:35, 2 May 2011 (CEST)

Is there an option to see the IP addresses of newly created accounts? I (not very wildly) guess that the current flood is caused by botnets - from my experience as Admin at the Dezhi Systems Support site I know that usernames like the two I just blocked, Fastoomph606455 and Gamylounge549364, are very typical for automated systems. Prino 12:04, 9 May 2011 (CEST)

I don't think there's an extension for this, but if you find something useful at mediawiki.org we can install it.
Maybe we can block more IPs? E.g. through some of these lists http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam#More_lists_of_proxy_and_spambot_IPs guaka 12:55, 9 May 2011 (CEST)

Can't a CAPTCHA be added to the registration page to prevent new accounts from being created automatically? CRCulver 12:29, 9 May 2011 (CEST)

There is a reCAPTCHA at account creation... But they're outsourced and spammers still make money. guaka 12:55, 9 May 2011 (CEST)

Thanks

Thanks for the Welcome! Its jolly good to be editing on here now that I'm back on my own turf :) after using it a lot. By the way, I guess you're aware that on the hitchwiki maps page, typing in any city to the search bar is always taking me to Paris?! This has happened to me in europe and in Australia, I guess its a common problem? Its a lovely city... to be sure.. but other places are nice too :) I noticed your name on the maps tutorial page, have you any advice on this? :) Dear Sarah 02:10, 24 September 2010 (CEST)

Thanks

I have just added some more info and would like others to contribute P.S. Sorry if I am replying in the wrong way or place.

Joho MrTweek, I never did hitch out of Düsseldorf directly as i think it's not so fast. I am always driving to Oberhausen Sterkrade instead and from there to Heinrich-Heine-Str. I wrote it in the Düsseldorf page. I'll try to post all my tips here. Let's keep this website growing ;).

Hi MrTweek! Thanks for your message! even though i am not 1oo percent sure if it makes a lot of sense to translate everything from english into german it's my please to help a bit with sharing info and translation. pesef

Hey MrTweek! Thanks for your contributions! Maybe you also know some more specific things about hitching in Austria and Hungary? Thanks, Guaka 04:38, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for the welcome. I'm in the middle of exams at the moment but I'll add some more info when I've got some spare time. Hope I can help :). --Tom 10:32, 16 May 2007 (CEST)

Thanks for your back up.pl give me some advice of the page construction. and i wanna meet you someday in the future, maybe 6810.

Hey MrTweek! We still did not make so much progress in Chinese hitchwiki ,if there is some problem pls fix it .thx!--Mipplor

What do you mean? What kind of problem? --MrTweek 18:34, 29 November 2010 (CET)
:Forget it ,everything is done! Mipplor

Howdy MrTweek, thanks for your message! Chile is in fact a wonderful country with amicable inhabitants. Indeed, that must be why I've settled down here for the time being. Hopefully I will become more knowledgeable about the ins and outs of hitchhiking in other parts of the world so I can share them on this wiki. Take care! Eripson 10:26 (UTC), 22 March 2011

Woah!

is this how this works? if so, thanks MrTweek. Maybe we'll bump thumbs crossing asia in a few years; i'd love to chat about trans-eurasian hitching with folks what knows.

Apache difficulties

I noticed you were trying to work out the problem with pages that begin with accented characters. Would you like me to help out? I'm pretty crafty with 'nix, php, etc. and I got my Wiki working perfectly with the "pretty links." Any kind of character works. Zactalk 15:33, 19 June 2007 (CEST)

Yes, maybe I get back to you with that. Foreign characters at the beginning of an article name work for you? My apache's utf8-support seems to be broken since I upgraded from debian sarge to etch. I didn't find time (and motivation) to fix this yet. --MrTweek 15:55, 19 June 2007 (CEST)
Hey, I just fixed it :) Was not an apache-problem but a broken rewrite rule. Changed it from ^([A-Z]*)$ to ^(.+)$ now it works perfectly for me. Thanks for kicking me to get this running ;) --MrTweek 16:25, 19 June 2007 (CEST)
This makes me think of setting up a team to maintain stuff on the servers. It's good to set up project:Server maintenance or something like that :) Guaka 19:11, 19 June 2007 (CEST)

My mod_rewrite is set up like this:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^wiki/(.*) w/index.php?title=$1 [PT,L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^wiki/*$ wiki/ [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^/*$ wiki/ [L,QSA] #remove this if you want more content than the wiki in the root

It's supposedly better to edit pages from index.php?title=.... instead of just the "pretty links" because you can block index.php from being indexed in search engines with robots.txt and then you have cleaner search results. Zactalk 20:06, 19 June 2007 (CEST)

Hey

Hey, I think I can add a lot of stuff after the next 6 weeks, in 2 days we start down from the Netherlands to a trip across Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria (mainly), Romania and Hungary :) See you on the road, greetings ralf

Hitching trips on Google Maps

Hi Philipp. I'm also trying to get my hitching tracks into Google Maps. However, after having drawn about 50 lines, the site has become really slow and I'm not able to add more lines fluently. Should you have any suggestions for this, then I'd be most interested. Here is one more map of a hitchhiker who put his trips into GM: http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=q&hl=nl&q=http%3A%2F%2Fjochem.lesparre-dewaal.nl%2Fliftroutes.kml&ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&ll=51.727028,6.240234&spn=12.809217,29.619141&z=5. He did it in another way, supposedly with an external (KML?) editor or a GIS application. Fverhart 2 July 2007

Yes, I have the same problems. It is very slow in Opera, but in Firefox it's ok. This depends a lot on your Computer speed. With my Pentium-M 1,6G Hz, it is just usable (in Firefox). In my company office with 2x2,8 GHz P4 it works very great. However, the more lines you draw, the slower it gets. I don't know about any external kml-editor. In google-earth you can at least read the files, but I think there is no possibility to edit them (but I'm not sure about that). Did you ask Jochem how he did this? I was wondering that too, because his maps look a little weird when you zoom very close. --MrTweek 12:22, 2 July 2007 (CEST)
Well, in FireFox on my PIII 350 mhz, 256+64 mb RAM it is simply slow :). With a somewhat faster machine @ work it is not workable, with only IE at hand. And I've drawn about 5% of the lines now. I don't know exactly how Jochem did it. It would be much better to find a solution for another problem. I'm keeping track of the petition at maastricht.hitchbase.org. However, the site is being spammed and now I get lots of mails of fake signature entries for the petition. I haven't got time to filter everything out, but the new entrees must be confirmed by clicking a link in the e-mail. This has been set up in PHP by a contact of Markus (mabe in Abgefahren). --Fverhart 12:22, 2 July 2007 (CEST)
Ok, in this case, your machine is obviously the reason ;) In general, Firefox seems to be the fastet in interpreting JavaScript.
Regarding your other problem: a nice, simple solution to avoid spam in forms is to add a textfield to the form, give it a name which spambots will like (i.e. email, name, url) and make it invisible (preferably with css). The user won't see it and won't fill it. The spambot doesn't know that it's invisible (they are not that good usually) and will probably fill some data into that field. Now you can delete all entries, where this field is filled. This worked really well for me in a few different cases. --MrTweek 20:16, 2 July 2007 (CEST)

Thanks

Hey! Thanks for the message, can't figure out how to message people, so I hope you get this. I've been using this site for ages, and figured it was about time I corrected some of the dreadful English on the France pages, and added to the site the little that I know. I'll add more in time, the hitch from Cardiff to Morocco really helped me, and I'll add a page on Cardiff too. Carl

It's actually great to read that people actually use Hitchwiki]] without even contributing :) It would be nice to have some more stats on that that these ones. And maybe we can find ways to make them actually click edit :) Guaka 14:27, 31 July 2007 (CEST)

liftershalte on hitchwiki

hey,

i just added a map of lifterhalte into the hitchwiki information for Varna in Bulgaria. Unfortunately I wanted to have a map of Varna showing the hybrid maps view, but it only appears as a normal map. Nevertheless the html code shows "View=2", what obviously stands for hybrid, right? Is there any way to show this kind of map? Otherwise the map for Varna seems quite useless since googlemaps only displays one street there ;)

Probably my mistake ;) I'll fix it the next days when I'm home again. --MrTweek

Yes, because the server is in the CEST timezone. The date in the articles is not dynamic, so it can't be different for each user. The timezone that you set in your preferences is only shown at the Recent Changes list, article history. I think there is no solution for this problem, unfortunately :(

liftershalte problem

Hi. The liftershalte help page brought me here. Everytime I try to add a point and click on "add point", it says "authentication error". What's wrong? --Kb 15:05, 6 March 2008 (CET)

Ouh, there was a bad bug. I just fixed it, please try again. You probably have to log out and log in again, so the changes will apply for you. Thanks for reporting that. --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 15:20, 6 March 2008 (CET)

Liftershalte & Blogs

Category:Germany

Moin, why categorizing back all the city articles to Cat:Germany? It was just the idea to sort them all to their states/provinces, like it happens with the German wiki: de:Kategorie:Deutschland. There, you go to the different states, and find the cities in there. Ok, it might be confusing for people who don't know in which states cities are located, but for that a) we have the city-template in the Germany article. Smaller cities/villages (like e.g. Hörstel) should stay in their state category, if you list them also in the germany category, it will be overcrowded once we have all 2000+ German cities in there ;) Hm, just my opinion, but I like the sorting from the german wiki much more, looks more sorted/cleaned up. Maybe I'm wrong, what do you think ;) ? --Platschi 20:05, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Categorizing back? Sorry, I didn't notice that :/ I just thought, we forgot that category all the time. No that I look at the German version, this looks quite good indeed. --MrTweek 20:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Hitchhikers categories

If there is a more detailed category (Hitchhikers from...) is to be applied, there is no need of keeping the old one (Hitchhikers) on the users' pages since it anyway includes the new, more detailed ones in itself. ;) --Sigurdas 09:04, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Over-enthusiastic new user + maps + various

Hi,

Can you please, please, please do something about Sigurdas? His changes may be well intentioned, but to me it is vandalism! My user page is my user page (and from what I've seen, I'm not the only one who thinks about things this way) and he has no right to put his completely undiscussed changes on it! If making me a sysop allows me to protect my page, then please make me a sysop, I'm currently unemployed and have been doing quite a bit of editing already, so you can see what I've done.

I am sorry about that, Prino. There was a quick discussion about this category (Hitchhikers from...) and back then nobody was against of creating and applying this category so I took it for granted to change users pages accordingly. In future I will try to avoid this kind of actions. Peace, --Sigurdas 19:29, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Q2, maps: I painstakingly put a Google map for Oostende on the page for my current place of residence, it's now a openstreetmap.org map, which is almost without detail...

Q3) Can you add the wikipedia character insertion box, so that it becomes a bit easier to add foreign characters, markup, symbols etc? And the longer edit tools toolbar (sub/super scripts, tables, etc)

Regards,

Robert - robert(a)prino(d)org

Hmm, I understand that. However, the categories where always the only part of the userpages, that are "allowed" to be edited by others. This is due to the fact, that we want some consistency there. As sigurdas already said, we discussed that before and everyone agreed. Then again, I see that this discussion was probably too short, to let everyone notice it. I'm sorry about that. Oh, and looks like someone made you a sysop, very good :)
Q2: I changed that now. It's the parameter 'view'. 0=gmaps, 1=sattelite, 2=hybrid, 3=osm.
Q3: Yes, I'll put that on my to-do-list.

New article about statistics - limits?

As one of the people with plenty of experience with statistics, I'm currently writing an article about the development of my statistics programs, from their very humble 5-tables per trip output to the somewhat over-the-top stuff they spew out now. Can you give me some guidance about article limits (i.e. no of lines) as it's likely to be pretty big, unless I create sub-pages linked to from the main page.

Also, any suggestions as to where to put it? The main statistics page seems to be just an idea-gathering place... Prino 10:56, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey, that sounds really cool :) There are no limits here, in theory you could write a book on one page. Just make sure its well-formatted and use senseful headlines, so it will be easy readable. I wouldn't use subpages, unless you have certain parts, that are useful on their own, without the context. I would suggest making a sub-page of the statistics site, separated by a /, i.e. Statistics/Prino Statistics Tool, but it can also be a completely independent page as well. --MrTweek 12:16, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Ooops. Thanks for fixing this, i will be more careful in future image uploads.

Thanks for your help!

I\m new to hitchhiking and your site and recommendation helped me alot! Especially the service area Goldene Bremm in saarbrucken was a hit. Hope to see you sometime on or off the road. // User:Denizo [1].

Cool, you're welcome. However, this is not only my site, but a site of all hitchhikers. So, if you have any good information or experiences, it would be great if you could contribute it ;) Even if it's just about how to hitchhike out of your hometown --MrTweek 10:24, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Germany to Morocco in the summer?

When are you going? And can I come too? --Tom 08:41, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Probably in August, maybe also end of July. Not completely sure yet. Are you going alone or with someone? I'll go with my girlfriend. I guess 3 persons would a little difficult, but 4 (2+2) could be great. What do you think? Let's discuss on Berlin Beach Camp, in case we meet in a sober moment. :) --MrTweek 09:02, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

please add my blog

Hi!

Check out my Blog at: http://hitchhikers.blog.com . Someone left me a comment saying you could maybe put a link to it on the wiki.

I'm a hitchhiker and spiritual seeker, travelling currently in India, soon to head for Nepal and, if the Lord be willing, Tibet. So far I've hitchhiked on this trip from Finland to Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Czech rep., Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Iran. I flew from Teheran to Delhi and went on hitchhiking, the destinations in India you can see from my blog.

This is my third trip hitchhiking in India and the second time I come from Finland (mostly) hitchhiking. The first time I covered all the distance overland, Finland-Sweden-(by boat to)Poland-Czech rep-Slovakia-Hungary-Romania-Bulgaria-Turkey-Iran-Pakistan-India. I 'cheated' on four occasions: boat from Sweden to Poland, bus in Turkey (from Sivas to Erzurum), train in Iran (a driver insisted on buying a train ticket for me from Esfahan to Bander Abbas) and a bus in Pakistan (from border to Quetta).

I did my first trip to India in 2005. The second time was 2007, when I hitchhiked from Finland-Estonia-Latvia-Lithuania-Poland-Slovakia-Hungary-Serbia-Greece-Turkey-Syria-Jordan-Israel-Egypt and then flew from Egypt to India. On that trip I 'cheated' in Greece, taking a train from Thessaloniki to Alexandropolis and between Syria(Damascos) and Jordan(Amman).

If you now got interested in hitching in more exotic places, I truly recommend Turkey and Iran. The hospitality of the people in Islamic culture is amazing - the first time I was in Iran I hitched here and there for 3 weeks and only one night I ended up sleeping in a guest house - otherwise the drivers (or others I met, walking around in smaller villages for example) would always invite me to their homes.

Paluch's questions about hitchwiki maps

From User talk:Guaka: I have some questions about Hitchwiki maps. I was searching through, but i couldn't find any up date info. First of all is it possible to edit other users spots. There is many roads being built or rebuilt in Poland recently and there are more and more spots that need or will need some updates or even removal. Second is how can I set my home position other than Paris, maybe I'm blind;) but couldn't find it. Third, I see there are changes in the maps in city pages. No more thumb symbols with rating. Any reasons why? Any recent talk page about? Thanx for any help. Greets! Paluch

Paluch again about hitchwiki maps and some other stuff

Hey thanks for your quick reply and improving the map. So far I've found one point to be removed as two users marked the same spot and write quite opposite description. But there's loads of points that need some updates and edits. I think we should avoid writing very subjective description, especially now after you created rating system. Maybe Hitchwiki Maps Help/FAQ section should be changed. There should be information what to write in the description. Probably most of us are not interested about some complaining of one user. I would like to find short info stating what kind of spot it is, like petrol station, slip road or lay-by and info about how to get there. Personal feelings about the spot should be stated only by rating. If I can edit points I will check all the points in Poland and abroad I know and clean them up a bit. Another thing is that I don't really know how to change my home position. And when I click My Points nothing happens. Any bug? Why some points are shown e.g. in zoom 3 and others not. How does it work? What is New Collection about? And last thing: sometimes when I have time I look for hitching spots online, mostly on Google Maps and Google search. I think I've found good spots in southern Madrid, which are not written in Madrid page. But I didn't have chance to check them out in real life, so I don't want to add them to city page. Maybe we can make a new section called e.g. Spots To Be? so other users when have possibility can check them out. What do you think about this? Greets. --Paluch 01:47, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Languages

Hey MrTweek, I just wanted to make a quick conversion table, to be linked to from the country infoboxes, but the wikitable didn't appear to get cosmetically right anyways. (had to walk the dog in the meanwhile so I couldn't finish it straight away) I'll make a redirect to the phrasebooks instead. Thanks for pointing this out. blog adding?

hi,

My name is Liam Walls, and I write the blog "liam's gone awol" that appears on your http://hitchwiki.org/planet/ page.

Firstly, i am interested how you found my blog, and would like to thank you for including me.

Secondly, i would like to ask that you link to my blog rather that post it wholesale at http://hitchwiki.org/planet/. I would prefer that you post the heading an part of the blog, and then people can click a link if they want to read more. Do you think this would be possible?

Oh, and can you reply by emailing me at liam.walls(ä)gmail.com ?

Thanks, and keep up the good wiki work!

Thanks, Liam

This is possible if you can make a feed like this on your blog. The planet software we use is pretty dumb AFAIK and doesn't have an option for this. (guaka not logged in) 194.78.136.226 13:50, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Planed trips: Poland

Dutch language

Can you set up a Hitchwiki in the Dutch language? I've come across some more Dutch sites related to hitchhiking recently, and I finally think it'd be nice to also have a Hitchwiki in Dutch. Also, can I have write perms in the top directory? I can't replace the Google Webmasters file there. Dankjewel, guaka 13:41, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Faroes

Thank you! Right, sorry, I was just adding some info and pictures - the whole page was already written in 1st person by someone else. Good you changed it all. Thumbs up!

ShareThis

I thought it was nice to set up ShareThis but I don't have w access to skins/common/images - can you fix that? Thanks, guaka 17:56, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

voila :) --MrTweek 18:52, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
BTW, it would be cool if you'd let Lanigiro run again for a bit. :) guaka 18:09, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll try. This thing is very unstable and sometimes hangs up or just doesn't work. I'll check for a new version --MrTweek 18:22, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Cool, I'm trying to disable some of the links there, but doesn't work yet. If that would have been working I would have added twitter, Facebook and StumbleUpon support... maybe another time. guaka 20:50, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
That's surely possible, but the documentation is lame :/ --MrTweek 20:58, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes... unfortunately.
FYI, I just 301d hitchwiki.info to hitchwiki.org, and I also added a meta description to index.php. guaka 12:11, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Oh, totally forgot to tell: The bot is up and running again. It does interwiki and some minor formatting stuff :) See here and here and wherever. It runs daily at 3:00 am CET --MrTweek 15:10, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Romanian?

Hi! Can you set up Hitchwiki in Romanian? guaka 07:52, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Chile

Hey, you just contacted me about my contribution for Chile. I changed my username to my real name [[User:Bernhard]|Bernhard]. Would like to delete the other one, is that possible?

Unfortunately not, but we can just ignore it and set a redirect from your old user page to your new one, that will be fine. --MrTweek 07:19, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to add my blog

Thanks, Pat

done :) --MrTweek 23:51, 1 November 2010 (CET)

Adding real html links - how?

I'd like to add this:

<a href="http://s07.flagcounter.com/more/FKn6"><img src="http://s07.flagcounter.com/count/FKn6/bg=FFFFFF/txt=000000/border=CCCCCC/columns=2/maxflags=12/viewers=0/labels=1/pageviews=1/" alt="Free counters!" border="0"></a>

Hmm, I am not sure if that's possible at all. The documentation is here, but I don't find exactly what you need. Maybe you can find it out, otherwise I'll check again tomorrow, need to sleep now ;) --MrTweek 00:40, 3 November 2010 (CET)
I've been trying anything and everything, but it just doesn't want to do it, maybe it really is impossible, unless you do some hard-coding at a higher level? Prino 20:12, 8 November 2010 (CET)
Yes, that's what I suspected. We could probably activate this somewhere in the Mediawiki configuration. However, this would open many new possibilities for spammers, so I guess we should better leave it as it is, as long as we don't have a really good use for it. --MrTweek 21:28, 8 November 2010 (CET)

New template, Tts

I've copied this one from Wikipedia, it should allow sorting hh:mm:ss times, but I cannot get it to work correctly, some text is not hidden. Can you have a look? Example is in User:Prino/sandbox

Actually, I got it to work by removing the align="right", but that means it won't work in Wiki tables.
Solved that too, by creating a separate Ttsh (Tts(for)h(tml)) template. Prino 16:04, 9 November 2010 (CET)
Cool, that looks nice :) --MrTweek 16:08, 9 November 2010 (CET)

Marvin?

What happened to User:Marvin? I've tried pywikipediabot a couple of times and even though I love Python I never tried hard enough to get something decent out of it. But it would be nice to have our beloved bot do some useful work around here though... :) guaka 15:49, 10 November 2010 (CET)

Don't know. Zac hasn't been here for ages. Lanigiro is doing his job quite well lately though. He is also a pywikipediabot. What do you want him to do, that he doesn't yet? Should be easy to enhance him. You can also have access to his scripts, if you want. --MrTweek 15:51, 10 November 2010 (CET)
Here is one cool thing for Lanigiro: adding links to trashwiki articles. guaka 00:07, 17 January 2011 (CET)

Think something went wrong here with your bot. guaka 15:59, 11 November 2010 (CET)

Yes, thank you. I am actually running some quickly hacked scripts which are using wikipediafs. Seems like it can't handle file larger than 8 KB. Still trying. --MrTweek 16:03, 11 November 2010 (CET)
Ok, it's finished now. I just skipped large pages, so it worked fine. I think I'll run this script once a year or so. --MrTweek 16:21, 11 November 2010 (CET)

Hitchhiking dream?

Hey MrTweek, this is Dargeron, who improved the Baku section the other day. After your reply, I checked your profile and was surprised to read that your dream is to hitchhike from Europe to Australia. Well, but that's exactly what I'm doing right now! (more specifically, I'm going from my house in Spain to it's exact antipode in New Zealand). I am in China now, and I hope to be in NZ by summer, so if you need any sort of information at all, just contact me by hitchwiki or at my email! I hope you set up your mind and go, it's a really amazing trip! :D Best luck with it and happy new hitchhiking year! ^^

hey cool! thanks for motivation ;) actually i got it all sorted out and will definitely go, starting in june. i'll e-mail you some time next month. i have some questions, especially about visas. happy new year. --MrTweek 09:44, 31 December 2010 (CET)

border crossings

Hey, alles klar?

Spammers

Suggestion, if possible: block all usernames of the format 'letters' followed by 'numbers' Prino 18:08, 25 February 2011 (CET)

Is there a way for non-Bureaucrats Administrators (i.e. people like me, Prino) to see the IP addresses of newly created users. I have the distinct feeling that the spammers are now using a different format of name, and I'm pretty certain that "Nealedward", "Kriechstrom" and "Lloydbryan" will turn out to be more spammers... Prino 00:49, 30 December 2011 (CET)

I'm unfortunately no expert on this spam issue, though I made you Bureaucrat as well, Prino. Hope that helps! All the best for 2012, --Platschi 09:01, 31 December 2011 (CET)
Can you (or anyone in the know) please, pretty please try to do something to block usernames that are of the format 'letters' followed by 'numbers' (via een regex?) They are invariably spammers. Names of the format XalalaXalala (X: any uppercase consonant, a: any lowercase vowel & l: any lowercase consonant) are also spammers! (and should also be easy filterable via a regex) Prino 00:05, 11 March 2012 (CET)

news

Ha! I didn't see it was in events. Fair enough :-) Robino 01:10, 1 March 2011 (CET)

Events template

IMHO the events should be ordered the way they ware, i.e. latest at the top... Prino 22:11, 16 March 2011 (CET)

Hmm, but why? I think the events that happen really soon should be on top. Sometimes, we had events that are more than 1 year in the future. They would stay on top all the time then. --MrTweek 09:43, 17 March 2011 (CET)
That's true, but maybe the template should have an additional entry that links to future events like those further away than 60/90/180 days? Is there no way of automating this and also to "roll-off" events that have passed? Prino 11:22, 21 March 2011 (CET)
I added an horizontal line between events for this summer and event(s) after summer. Not sure which criteria to use. 3 months? 6 months? It's not easy to automate it. There might be plugins for that, but I think as long as we never had more than 10 events, we can handle it manually. I'll do some research anyway. --MrTweek 11:27, 21 March 2011 (CET)

Cleanup registered but inactive users

There are currently around 500 users who made edits in the last 91 days, on a total of more than 2,000 and some user-names seem to be very fishy, like

  • 3P2e3K68 (Created on 2007-09-30 at 17:12:10)
  • 3j2e3m64 (Created on 2007-09-30 at 09:48:20)
  • 9Pd2q8Kh (Created on 2007-10-01 at 22:31:42)

Wouldn't it be possible to match the "made edits" and "all users" lists against each other, and delete all users who never made any edits and haven't logged on for more than 365 (or whatever) days? I'm administrator on Dezhi Systems support site and here we go even further, people need to be activated by an admin to get write access to the forum (about 95% of our requested registrations are coming from spammers) and people who haven't returned in the month following activation are mercilessly zapped, as are those who have never posted and and haven't logged in for over six months. It keeps things tidy... Prino 11:35, 21 March 2011 (CET)

Yeah, I agree and I'd love to do that. The thing is, mediawiki does not really support deleting users. We can only block them, or set them inactive, but they will not disappear from the user list. I am not sure why.
Might this be of any use: User Merge and Delete extension
But then again, the question is: why do we want that? It'll will keep the records clean, yes, but does it have any practical use? --MrTweek 18:18, 21 March 2011 (CET)
I'm from the z/OS world, where userid's are deleted the moment someone leaves a company. It's a matter of security. If a userid no longer exists, it cannot be abused. Prino 21:20, 21 March 2011 (CET)
At the moment, we don't have a problem with spammers. They will surely come back some time, but as long as they don't, I'd prefer keeping hitchwiki as open as possible. Wikipedia is a good example that even huge sites can live with anonymous edits and automated registrations. I guess it's a matter of the ratio between active users and active spammers. Let's see how it will work for us :) --MrTweek 11:44, 21 March 2011 (CET)

Template wildgrowth

Do we really need any more templates on every country, like i.e.

{{Cities Netherlands}} {{Provinces NL}} in the Netherlands or

{{Regions Denmark}} in Denmark.

These are IMHO completely irrelevant as far as hitchhiking is concerned. Prino 17:25, 16 May 2011 (CEST)

Good question. I did not create any of these and hardly ever use them. Then again, I don't see how they cause any harm. Can't be that bad to have many links between many pages, can it? 12:35, 20 May 2011 MrTweek
Yeah why not have them? Links are good.
It would be good however to follow some kinda standard for this. Maybe Wikipedia has something somewhere? Whoever enjoys creating templates should look into that a wee bit... guaka 00:08, 21 May 2011 (CEST)

I like to use the iframe possibility, but your program seems to not understand the longitude parameter, the following map should show the service station Inntal West, but have a look:

The parameter for the longitude parameter in the Code for embedding-box of Hitchwiki Maps is not lng but lon!

hey, i love the hitchwiki planet, and i've got a question: the abgefahren sms blog is totally swamping the planet and i think you're running that as well -- would it be possible to make the syndicated rss a daily (or weekly or whatever) roundup of the texts? right now there's nothing but text messages on there, and while they're fun, i really come to the planet for the more long-winded hitchhiking stories... ;) cheers! Hitchability, again

Salut, M. Tweek,
Would you mind having another brief look here? I believe it would be very simple to add the senseless to very good tags to what we have now which basically only is the symbol and the "rate". Catch my drift? ;-) once you'd add it I'd be all over this place replacing 'em templates in the country articles :-)--Zenit 19:27, 4 September 2011 (CEST)

6 months?

Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely that spammers will become nice contributors after 6 months... So it's best to just block them forever! guaka 00:47, 2 October 2011 (CEST)

Hmm, true. I didn't really think about it. So we said 6 months for ip addresses and infinite for usernames, right? --MrTweek 10:59, 2 October 2011 (CEST)
Probably we decided that somewhere. No one has been able to edit without being logged in for quite a while already, so that should make all blocks on spammers "infinite". And AFAIK know we never had to block a real hitchhiker (and I don't think we'll ever need to :) So maybe it's possible to easily change the default settings? :) guaka 09:51, 3 October 2011 (CEST)

Two users Rocky...

Have a look at this changelog - where an Israelian guy takes over he page of a Belgian one... What to do about it? Prino 00:52, 12 December 2011 (CET)

Unblock IP address - how?

I blocked "Apothecary" but he's legit. Unblocked him, be he claims his IP address is still blocked. How do I unblock that if I cannot see it? Thanks Prino 12:48, 21 January 2012 (CET)

I unblocked him. In the block list, there's a link to the IP Block list. May I ask how you determine "unacceptable usernames"? I am not sure wether it's a good idea to block users before they did any harm. --MrTweek 12:52, 21 January 2012 (CET)
The FirstLastzrt etc are all spammers, most usernames ending in one or more digits are spammers, if you look on Google for new usernames, and they register on umpteen fora with the same name and that name doesn't occur anywhere else in the search results, you are almost certainly dealing with a spammer. "Apothecary" has rather strong links with certain types of medication. And names like Rowentasteamer and Deckerfoods are patently obvious. Happy with this explanation? Prino 13:35, 21 January 2012 (CET)
Yup, sounds good, never mind :) --MrTweek 13:36, 21 January 2012 (CET)

Where are you? / Abgefahren

Hey :) You mentioned on your page that you are hitchhiking to Australia, where are you right now? In Cambodia? PS I have seen abgefahren note near Thessaloniki on a road sign, a very funny one, about hitchhiking 3 or 4 days from Athens and being very pissed off ;-) Then in Yazd in a CS flat of Balal saw some notes on the wall again :) Take care. rozwal 16:28 2012-04-21

Yup, I basically travelled the silk road, via Turkey, Caucasus, ferry from Baku to Aktau and then Uzbekistan, China, Vietnam, etc...
Nice to hear that our members are spreading the propaganda :) --MrTweek 10:54, 22 April 2012 (CEST)

Blog

Link: http://www.naturundfreiheit.de/index.php/blog/87-berichte-und-dokumentationen/schuelerprojekt-expedition-in-england-und-wales/88-trampen-reisen-per-anhalter

Vielen Dank! LG Jan Temmel

Was meinst du?

Spam at the Russian part of the hitchwiki

Are you able to delete the spam and its contributor in the Russian part of the hichwiki? I am not. I can empty the pages, but I cannot block the user there. --GeorgDerReisende 23:49, 23 April 2012 (CEST)

now there is spam in the Spanish part --GeorgDerReisende 00:34, 20 July 2012 (CEST)

And fishy usernames in the Polish one. Sysops should have authority to remove trash from any language, and block users who post it! Prino 01:58, 20 July 2012 (CEST)
I don't think sysop rights can easily be synchronized across all languages but I went into mysql and made myself bureaucrat everywhere. Then I made both of you bureaucrats on both pl and es. Let me know if you want or need this on other languages as well. guaka 10:49, 20 July 2012 (CEST)

New extension

Can you consider installing Recent Changes Cleanup extension, so that we can clean up the Special:RecentChanges log, which is currently struggling under large amounts of blocks of spammers.

User Merge and Delete might also be useful to prune the list of users, i.e. remove the blocked spammer names from the site. Prino 08:16, 25 August 2012 (CEST)

I installed the Recent Changes Cleanup now. You can use it at Special:RecentChangesCleanup. For the other extension, I need to upgrade mediawiki first, which I will hopefully do within the next days. --MrTweek 09:09, 27 August 2012 (CEST)
The Recent Changes Cleanup page displays completely messed up. Tried logging of/on, no effect, can you have a look? Prino 00:44, 19 September 2012 (CEST)
Weird. Anyway, Simison and Guaka are going to upgrade mediawiki next week. Maybe that fixes it and then we can also install the other extension. --MrTweek 10:49, 20 September 2012 (CEST)

Admin rights

Can you also give me admin rights on the other language parts where I currently do not have them (de, pl, pt, fr), so that I can also kick out spammers on them? Prino 08:38, 20 September 2012 (CEST)

Done --MrTweek 10:49, 20 September 2012 (CEST)
And also on the Dutch one? Prino 11:04, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Done --MrTweek 11:31, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Would also like to have them on the Russian one, plenty of fishy usernames out there! Prino (talk) 12:44, 7 October 2012 (CEST)
Done. Btw, did you encounter any real spam last days? Just wondering whether my plugin does its job --MrTweek (talk) 12:55, 7 October 2012 (CEST)
No spam, which is good. Just oodles of useless usernames - what happened with the Merge-and-Delete extension? And isn't there a way to directly interface with the SQL backend? Prino (talk) 13:12, 7 October 2012 (CEST)
Good. The plugin makes sure they can't post urls, so probably they sign up and give up then. Talk to Guaka or Mikael for the extension, I don't know in detail what they did. What do you want to do with SQL? There is a way, of course, but since one could easily destroy the whole wiki, even accidently, there is no public access to it. --MrTweek (talk) 13:26, 7 October 2012 (CEST)
And admin rights on the BG, FI, ZH, TR & HR versions? And can we do something about blocking user names ending in digits? IMHO the most ideal solution would be to let them go through completely normal, but to not store them into the database, effectively "loosing them on the way". It would keep the logs clean, and on that subject, is there a way to show more entries on the "Recent Changes Cleanup", having been on the road for three days, it's not possible to clean out all spammy user creations any more! Prino (talk) 00:21, 13 October 2012 (CEST)
You got Admin rights in these languages now as well.
Can you re-issue me with admin rights on the "nl" wiki, I seem to have lost them after the restore, and there currently are quite a few link-spam page. Prino (talk) 14:14, 8 September 2013 (CEST)
Done. --MrTweek(talk) 15:22, 8 September 2013 (CEST)
And on the Polish one, is also suffering from link-spam. Prino (talk) 12:18, 11 September 2013 (CEST)
You should have admin rights right in all wikis now. --MrTweek(talk) 12:28, 11 September 2013 (CEST)
About the user names with digits: I really don't like the idea, as we might lock out potential human users as well. As long as they just sign up and give up then, they don't do any harm. They just pollute the database, which isn't nice, but not a real problem either, I think. Actually, as long as they don't post anything, I don't even block them any more, because I don't think they will ever come back anyway. We might want to create a script to delete users that were never active at all after signing up or something like that. Anyone else has an opinion on that?
Also, I added a num-switch to RecentChangesCleanup. See here.
--MrTweek(talk) 05:42, 13 October 2012 (CEST)
We should be as inclusive as possible to non-spammers. A script that deletes users who never contributed after 1 year would be fine. guaka (talk) 16:00, 13 October 2012 (CEST)

Infobox region + IsIn

Hi MrTweek, I've got a question about the Template:Infobox region, maybe you can help me with that: I've been adding it to most articles on Mexican states. The problem is that it stays on top of the article (see Campeche or Michoacán for an example). However, I'd like the infobox to float right, as does a map without an infobox yet, e.g. in Nuevo León. And I've got another question, about the Template:IsIn. It seems to have disappeared with the new Hitchwiki design. Is there any chance of getting it back? Cheers, QuéSéYo2 (talk) 15:45, 20 October 2012 (CEST)

I moved the infobox to the right now. It's nice anyway :)
We know about the IsIn-problem, and we'll fix it eventually. --MrTweek(talk) 03:59, 28 October 2012 (CET)
Thank you very much, that looks very good now! :) QuéSéYo2 (talk) 12:42, 28 October 2012 (CET)

Edit conflict

Have been talking to User:‎Strazdas007 on Skype. Whatever he tries to edit will end, when he saves it with an "Editing conflict". I initially blocked him as his name is pretty spammy, but unbloced him later when he contacted me, and he was able to create his page yesterday, but right now he's completely stuck. Can you have a look at what's going on? He cannot even edit your talk page! Prino (talk) 09:14, 25 October 2012 (CEST)

Damn, I assume, that has to do with the anti-spambot extension. Users who signed up less than 7 days ago and have less than 10 edits can not post external links. Unfortunately, this seems to also block editing pages, that already have external links in them. I'll try to fix that on the weekends.
Also, can you please stop randomly blocking new users, unless you know for sure they are spammers? I just got another complaint by User:MaxHeiliger, and I am sure, not every user who is blocked on accident will complain, some might just give up. --MrTweek(talk) 04:33, 26 October 2012 (CEST)
If you look at the block log, you will see that I (and GeorgDerReisende) don't really block randomly. I admit that there is a chance that we may accidentally block a bona-fide user and MaxHeiliger was borderline. Strasdaz007 and FelixAkk clearly fit the pattern of the spammers we have to cope with at the moment. If someone's really real, they will email, as MaxHeiliger, Strazdas007 and FelixAkk have done (and some other girl a while ago). Given that ever spammer can read what you wrote above (unlikely, but not impossible), better, IMHO, safe than sorry. If you look at the list of active (genuine) users, there are virtually none with numbers in their usernames, or more than one capital letter, so anyone who creates a username with both of these characteristics is quite likely some bot following a programmed rule. Prino (talk) 13:18, 26 October 2012 (CEST)
I don't really agree with 'better safe than sorry', especially since we had hardly any spam (or even none at all?) recently. I made the restrictions a little more lose now, let's see if that brings the spammers back. If not, we can just stop banning users before they posted spam. At least now everyone should be able to post again. We'll see. --MrTweek(talk) 03:35, 28 October 2012 (CET)
Hey, I've got numbers and several capital letters in my user name and I'm not a spammer ;) QuéSéYo2 (talk) 12:46, 28 October 2012 (CET)
You're the exception that confirms the rule, and besides that spammers are to stupid to use accented letters! :) Prino (talk) 14:00, 28 October 2012 (CET)
That's probably correct :) QuéSéYo2 (talk) 16:22, 28 October 2012 (CET)

new blog on your list? :)

Hi MrTweek,

We are Ania & Jon, a hitch-hiking couple who founded hitchhikershandbook.com

We invite you to have a look at our blog and if you like it, please add it to your list :)

We also have a list of hitch-hiking blogs, so if you know any blogs worth recommending, give us a shout: http://hitchhikershandbook.com/2012/12/04/how-to-travel-on-a-budget-transportation-part-1-hitchhiking/

Many thanks and safe travels in the new year!

Ania & Jon

HHH hitchhikershandbook.com

I suppose you mean to the hitchhiking planet? I just added it there. Cheers, MrTweek(talk) 04:59, 6 January 2013 (CET)

Yes, thanks a dozen and happy hitching! :)

Login problems

For whatever reason, logging in to one (/en) wiki, will no longer automatically log you on the the others. Is this deliberate, or is it a bug?

It's definitely very inconvenient, as the /en password is rejected by all others... :( Prino (talk) 23:12, 19 April 2013 (CEST)

Yes, it's a known bug. I think Mikael (simison) is working on it. Should be fixed soon. --MrTweek(talk) 10:33, 20 April 2013 (CEST)

CSS, big problem

Has something been changed with regards to the CSS?

The "Hitchwiki" default is working (well, sort of...), but all others result in long pages without any formatting. This happens both on Firefox and IE. Can you please, please, please have a look at it, and change back whatever caused this behaviour. Thanks! Prino (talk) 10:27, 31 July 2013 (CEST)

Image summaries not showing up

I am reuploading some images for the united states articles and I can't get the description/summary to appear below the image. What am I doing wrong?

digihitch emails

Kasper said you might have access to a list of old digihitch emails from 2010 on some sort of mySQL dump? If there is any chance of finding them, it would help immensely in getting hitchingit.com up on its feet since the dismal failure of digihitch.com Thewindandrain (talk) 01:03, 19 December 2013 (CET)

Sorry man, I don't have anything any more. I lost it in the hitchwiki server crash. However, there was barely anything useful left anyway, which is why I never bothered to reorganize it into a new database --MrTweek(talk) 01:06, 19 December 2013 (CET)

Regina?

Hey there MrTweek, I've got two questions:

I was going to create a new page for the City of Regina. But it says that You deleted a previous page by the same name, Apr. of last year? It is a real city, and I have Hitched to, and from it. Before I recreate it, I think that it is a good idea to find out a little more about why it was deleted. The note on the page says that it was part of a "Mass removal of pages added by 24.29.233.163"--Fish Soup (talk) 23:29, 15 June 2014 (CEST)
The only reason it was blocked is because someone spammed the page long time ago. I created it, now you should be able to edit it. --MrTweek(talk) 02:33, 16 June 2014 (CEST)
Canada, especially out west, really seems to be lacking information. I certainly have personal experiences to add to the site, but is it worthwhile for me to add info to the rest of the "Area" as well. Even cities that I have not necessarily Hitched through, but have been to? Getting them started now will save work for someone else down the road.
As long as you can add any information that may be relevant to hitchhiking (i.e. on which routes it is, road conditions), you are welcome to create the pages. Just creating a skeleton of a page is fine too, as long as it contains more than one line :) --MrTweek(talk) 02:33, 16 June 2014 (CEST)
Ok, sounds good - Fish Soup (talk) 02:55, 16 June 2014 (CEST)

Gexcube

A real user?

Google only results in hits on Radeon drivers and a Twitter account from someone who doesn't seem to have anything to do with hitchhiking.

Giving a reason will only allow (potential) spammers more clues on how to avoid being blocked... Prinoblog, talk 23:36, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

He sent me an email, asking why he was blocked. I couldn't tell him, because there was no reason given. --MrTweek(talk) 23:38, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Is Lanigiro alive?

Hi! Recently we have increased activity in Russian HitchWiki and I was looking for a bot for updating interwiki links. As I see, it was intended to be ran periodically, but his last activity was 2-3 years ago. Do we have a chance to see his activity again? --alexy (talk) 15:29, 14 December 2015 (CET)

Hi Alexxy. No, the bot is dead right now. I'll try to revive it one day. Feel free to remind me, in case I forget. --MrTweek(talk) 05:02, 21 December 2015 (CET)
Alive again :) --MrTweek(talk) 06:20, 14 January 2016 (CET)
Cool! Does the bot add missing "opposite direction" link to translation? Say, if АБВГ article in Russian has link to en:ABCD, it should add link to ru:АБВГ to ABCD, should it? For example, I see that the bot fixed link in ru:Гомель to en:Gomel (there was a link to redirected page before), but en:Gomel still doesn't have link to ru:Гомель --alexy (talk) 12:26, 14 January 2016 (CET)
Yes, that is what it should do. And also add other languages, if they are set on of the pages. I'm not sure why this is not working in that case, but will have a look. --MrTweek(talk) 13:39, 14 January 2016 (CET)
Maybe it will add back-links on next pass? --alexy (talk) 13:44, 14 January 2016 (CET)
Yes, you are right. The link is there now. --MrTweek(talk) 23:47, 14 January 2016 (CET)
Will it run periodically or you'll run it manually? --alexy (talk) 12:26, 14 January 2016 (CET)
Right now it is only manually, but once I am confident that it does what it should, I will set it up to run daily or weekly or something like that. --MrTweek(talk) 13:39, 14 January 2016 (CET)

The ugly as fuck hitchwiki skin and other problems

If hitchwiki is owned by a community, why does Mikael get free reign in changing it?

Because he is the only one who does it.
Why doesn't he talk about this first?
I don't know --MrTweek(talk) 00:33, 22 December 2015 (CET)

Flags and other images pulled from Mediawiki Commons still don't display (other than 30px etc),

True, didn't notice that. Will try fixing this later today.
Doesn't this bug relates to this? --alexy (talk) 23:01, 21 December 2015 (CET)
I reported this on 10 November... Prinoblog, talk 00:19, 22 December 2015 (CET)
I didn't see that, sorry. For important things, feel free to email me directly. I don't really check github that much. --MrTweek(talk) 00:33, 22 December 2015 (CET)

but apparently the skin is more important - I like the vector layout, others the classic mediawiki one, why cant we keep at least those two?

Because you are the only one who complains about the skin. But tend to be rude as fuck so nobody seems to be too keen on accommodating your requests.
Sorry for that, but a change that is this far-reaching should be discussed with the community first! Prinoblog, talk 00:19, 22 December 2015 (CET)
In some ways this behaviour is the same as the one exercised by M$: Giving updates that aren't updates at all, but telemetry crap that cannot be blocked, and 3Gb keylogger that looks like an OS! Prinoblog, talk 00:19, 22 December 2015 (CET)
Small comment regarding skin, as here's a speech on it: in Language menu in non-English versions there's no "English" item --alexy (talk) 23:01, 21 December 2015 (CET)

And have you seen the new users registering? Obviously the anti-bot measures are totally broken at the moment!

Yeah, must have broken from the update. I disabled registrations for now until I find out what went wrong.

--MrTweek(talk) 22:46, 21 December 2015 (CET)

There is a more elaborate Recaptcha (as used by the RDNS option on the Check User Special page), and for what it's worth, I hope it's OK this time that I M&D the rubbish that's been registering today? Prinoblog, talk 00:19, 22 December 2015 (CET)
Yes, feel free to clean them up. I just installed reCaptcha again. It's daytime here now, so I'll keep an eye on it. Will also try registering on stopforumspam again. --MrTweek(talk) 00:33, 22 December 2015 (CET)
StopForumSpam is up and running now. Note that this will not prevent users from registering, but only from editing. Let's see how well that goes. --MrTweek(talk) 01:40, 22 December 2015 (CET)

Hitchwiki maps bug

Clicking any dot on HW maps currently results in `Sorry, that location cannot be found´ or similar message. --Fverhart (talk) 10:54, 22 December 2015 (CET)

Thanks for reporting. This is one for Mikael. I will let him know. --MrTweek(talk) 00:04, 23 December 2015 (CET)
Thanks! I noticed that today, too, when checking for hitching spots. I'm hitching and just heading for a ~3 day hike; won't be able to look into it before I return. Greets from the Mojave desert! - Mikael (talk) 05:53, 23 December 2015 (CET)

"...You can download full database dumps of the Hitchwiki in XML format here. They are updated daily. Well, have I got news for you, they're all way, way, way out of date... Prinoblog, talk 01:43, 26 December 2015 (CET)

This is fixed now, everything should get updated daily again. Thank you. --MrTweek(talk) 05:01, 1 April 2016 (CEST)

ReCaptcha issue

When adding my previous comment (I tried to add link to Github), I noticed a ReCaptcha bug: after clicking Save, a message appeared

Your edit includes new external links. To protect the wiki against automated spam, we kindly ask you to type the two words you see in the box below:

but ReCaptcha window didn't show up. I tried to click Save again several times, and finally the ReCaptcha appeared in the bottom of the page, but entering characters didn't help to save my change with the link --alexy (talk) 19:19, 19 January 2016 (CET)

a user recently told me that she was unable to register because of this reCaptcha bug (finally she succeeded after tried several times) --alexy (talk) 10:24, 9 February 2016 (CET)
Sorry for the slow reply. I switched to a different captcha now, and that shows up. Let me know if it works for you. --MrTweek(talk) 12:44, 9 February 2016 (CET)

Drumroots - temporary block

I've blocked him, for now for three days due to his refusal to use edit whole pages - he edits section by section (30 edits on Berlin, similar on London), often multiple times, found it necessary to change Autobahn / Rastststätte / etc into English. Patrolling his edits (yes, I do so for many users) is becoming a nightmare!

I've asked him on his talk page to change his way, but he does not! Prinoblog, talk 12:56, 11 June 2016 (CEST)

Pre-emptive spam blocks

I just blocked a number of spam accounts, and I also blocked a couple of accounts with no edits that were created at the same time, just in case. I'm not totally comfortable with this because I don't want to accidentally block a user who just happened to create an account at the same time as a spam attack, but a number of those accounts look suspicious, and two of them actually made some edits before I could pre-emptively block them. Is there a better way to go about this? Cheers, -- Irningston (talk) 22:40, 14 July 2016 (CEST)

Hi Irningston. Thanks for your effort. However, blocking user beacuse they don't have any edits is indeed a bad idea, mostly because it is hard to see whether they are active or not. They could just have edits in other language wikis. A lot of our users speak no or little English, so they will never contribute to the English wiki, but might be active somewhere else. Also, some users sign up only to add hitchhiking spots to our maps. They will not show up in the wikis recent changes either.
That said, please refrain from blocking users on this basis.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any better way of blocking users preemptively. Prino tried blocking them on suspicious user names, but that hit a lot of legit innocent users as well.
MrTweek(talk) 03:13, 15 July 2016 (CEST)
Ok, thanks, that's kind of what I figured. Just to be clear, I didn't block anyone *because* they had no edits. I was just fielding so much spam at once that it was kind of difficult to deal with, so I blocked all of the accounts that had been created within a short window and didn't have any non-spam edits. Of the 22 accounts I blocked, 8 had no edits yet when I went to block them (i.e. when I opened the page to block), and 2 of those 8 ended up making a spam edit before I could block them (that is, after I opened the page, but before I could save it). Deletion of Trains#Germany info

Hi. I see you deleted some stuff User:PeterOB wrote in Trains#Germany. Don't you think you should mention it on his talk page? It does seem far-fetched that somebody would go to jail for blackriding. (Maybe Peter is a DB agent, trying to discourage us with misinformation?) But it still doesn't seem right to delete information without a mention.

I was informed in such a way that my technique for Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket-hitchhiking is no longer possible [hitchwiki.org/en/User_talk:Dr.Keith#Train_Hitchhiking_in_Germany]. User:Mohit removed the information from Deutsche Bahn, but the information is still written on Trains#Germany. I will remove that too, leaving the section empty! I'll going to replace it with a summary of the Deutsche Bahn article and include a link there for more information.

Thanks for the heads up. I left a message for Peter about this. I'm generally very cautious with information about black riding, as this might be considered encouraging people to illegal activities and could potentially get the author or in the worst case even me in trouble --MrTweek(talk) 02:05, 26 July 2016 (CEST)

Hey MrTweek

The Hichwiki spam protection is totally crazy. Difficult captcha and it is blocked again afcer captcha solution. I wasn't able to writte message last year, because of this.

Yes, sorry, there are some problems with spam at the moment. I don't know when this can be resolved. --MrTweek(talk) 00:58, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

It is better to contact me on mail [email protected] , because here is difficult to write something (no h.t.t.p.s, bad spam protection).

I have got some information about it from my friends and one of my friend was really in jail for two weeks in Germany. He was catched in train and in tram. There was another message in Czech news, that one Czech girl was lost and found in German jail for blackriding for few days or weeks. Both both can be about 8 years back, now it is not so hard.

You don't go to jail for black riding alone. You get a 60 € fine and that's it.
You will only go to jail if you refuse to pay the fine, or do something stupid like assaulting inspectors or refusing to show any kind of id. Black riding a single time is never enough for that. --MrTweek(talk) 00:58, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

I have met in Rainbow some German friend, he explain me how it works. Ant it is something like cheat (you do not have ticket but you act like you have ticket.) If you visible say that you are blackrider, then it is not crime and you can just get penalty Eur 60.

Yeah, that's a very common urban legend but not true at all. Black riding is still illegal if you clearly state that you are doing it. There have been court rules about this. If you understand German, just google for "Ich fahre schwarz". Yet many people seem to believe this rubbish. --MrTweek(talk) 00:58, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

I have quite a lot of experiences with European traveling, hitchhiking and taking trains, especially in north and in France and I try to share best information.

How you mean that I can get me or somebody else with this article ? By frightening or by bad informations ?

And even - after all CAPTCHA Spam filter do not let pas any edit with chain h.t.t.p. So I have to delete this chain even from your article - I deactivated link, because of spam filter.

Again, sorry for this. I really hope there will be a solution for this soon. --MrTweek(talk) 00:58, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Hitchwiki bug

Hello there Mr Tweek!

I'm at a loss in attempting to contact hitchwiki people about this issue so I hope that this is a way to get a response. Everytime I try to add a place I get the message - "could not add place due to error." This has been going on for a while now and I have tried numerous times to contact hitchwiki but with no acknowledgement at all. I really don't know what's going on. Other pages are down as well with the 404 error message. Is there anyone doing anything to fix these bugs? I literally have had no response at all from several emails and messages over the course of the past five months. Please drop me a line when you have the opportunity. Many thanks. talk

Recent spam attack

Still shitloads of pages around.

Suggest this approach:

1) Block spammer - useful to auto fill the Report to spamhaus box!!! 2) "Merge and delete" to "SpamBucket" 3) Then delete all recent changes from SpamBucket - there were some mistaken M&D's in the past, so only recent stuff 4) Use "Recent Changes Cleanup" (include it in your script!) to hide the deleted garbage from the Recent Changes Log (where it will still be picked up by Google and the like!)

Check what's there now on the dozens of User Talk pages listed at

Spam in other language Hitchwikis

I was just checking around, and I came across some spam pages in Portuguese, Spanish, and French Hitchwikis. You can check my contributions over there for the pages - I just replaced the content with "spam". (In French, I came across like 30 more pages, so I just stopped, but just about all of the new user pages here are spam.) Would you be willing to delete those pages and block those users? Or could you make me an admin in those languages, and I can do it myself? Cheers, -- Irningston (talk) 19:52, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Howdy Irningston! I just made you an admin at all the wikis. Thanks for all the work you've done! -Mikael (talk) 20:57, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
Fantastic, thank you! -- Irningston (talk) 22:09, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Hitchwiki administration

Hello MrTweek,
Are you still involved in the technical administration of Hitchwiki? If not, do you know who is? Thanks!--Zenit (talk) 10:58, 3 November 2020 (CET)

Hi, I am doing most of the sysadmin work. guaka (talk) 21:16, 6 December 2021 (CET)
