He is homeless by choice and camps and works in his homebase of Kansas City to save up money each year for hitchhiking trips. Total career hitchhiking distance: about 14,000 miles (22,500 km)
Longest ride: Santa Rosa, New Mexico to Needles, California; truck driver delivering unmarked school bus to Salinas, CA (650 miles.) He would have taken me almost 1000 miles, but someone at a gas station in Needles was going all the way to Sacramento, CA, so transferred to their car at the gas station.) Several other 500+ mile rides have been had.
